Should the Goths get a new bonus?

Since the Goth 5 attack bonus against wild boars is gone. Should they get a new bonus?

Here’s a simple one. Capped Ram upgrade is free. Auto upgrades when they reach the Imperial Age. Getting Siege Ram might be too much. They still save 300 food. If they had Siege Ram, they would save 1300 food, and the power spike might be too much. They still lack Siege Engineers tech.

On the other hand, Goths having bombard cannons is strange. So, what if they simply got free Siege Ram upgrade instead?

The Goths don’t need a new bonus to make up for the lost bonus because the lost bonus was never actually good. It was often hurting them more then helping them.

Though I think they need a little rework for 2 reasons:

  1. They really really should not have gunpowder units (there are no excuses for that! They are clearly supposed to represent a migration period civ not a Renaissance one)
  2. Having their UU be trained in both Castle and Barracks is redundant.

So I suggest 2 changes:

  1. Huskarl completely moved to Barracks with -4 PA. Anarchy gives +4 PA
  2. New UU “Mounted Slinger” with bonus damage vs. Infantry and Siege that replaces Hand Cannons and Bombard Cannons.

This should keep the current balance and current feel of the civ but make it feel more thematically consistent.

How can you replace two units with one when they are supposed to do two different things?
Im pretty sure you cant use a sling on horseback due to the way a sling works.

Historical Goths relied a lot on cavalry, they learned that during their time on the pontic steppe. Giving them a “light cataphract” as UU to replace the HC as a cav counter and indeed fully moving the huskarl to the barracks would do the trick. As cav it’s also naturally good vs siege so it does part of the job of the BC.

Gothic Lancer : light-medium cav with a bonus vs infantry and siege. Its look reminds of the Rohirrim as Rohan is directly inspired by the Wisigoths.

I’d add a third UU to fully replace the HC : foederatus, a unique militia-line upgrade that replaces 2HS and champion (similar to the roman legionary), with a higher bonus vs buildings as well as being a solid line holder as expected from the militia line. Uses a ranged attack vs building (auto mode similar to the fire archer and lou chuan) : throw torches. They did sack Rome and this would play into their infantry focus while having the mobile destructive power that the BC used to give them.

By letting the unit do both things.

It was not very common but it was a thing, also on the Steppes.

It would be a logical weapon for anti Infantry and anti Siege bonus.

I suggested a ranged unit because it can easier fill the role that is currently filled by ranged units.
