Slow Mode concept

AoM(R) is very fast compared to all AoE games.
The most popular AoE game is also the slowest one, AoE2.

AoMR vs. AoE2DE

Resource AoE2 Villager Greek Villager Egyptian Labourer
Hunt 0.41 1.0 0.9
Farm 0.32 0.7 0.63
Wood 0.39 1.0 0.9
Gold 0.38 0.85 0.77
Cost 50 Food 50 Food 50 Food
Train Time 25s 15s 15s

AoE2 villagers are less then half as efficient as Egyptian Labourers for most of the resources while taking almost twice as long to train.

AoMR vs. AoE3DE

Resource AoE3DE Settler/Villager German Settler Wagon Atlantean Citizen
Hunt 0.84 1.7 1.5
Farm 0.5 1.0 1.05
Wood 0.5 1.0 1.5
Gold/Coin 0.6 1.2 1.28
Cost 100 Food 100 Food 100 Wood 75 Food 25 Wood
Train Time 25s 25s (requires card) 25s

Citizens and Settler Wagons both cost 2 population and are supposed to be as good as 2 normal Settlers and they both don’t need drop of buildings so they are a good comparison.

Atlantean Villagers cost as much as AoE3DE Settlers, with the same train time, but they are as good as Settler Wagons.

Slow Mode

  • All resource collection rates 0.5x (this includes Favour and all trickles)
  • Villager Train time 2x
  • Everything else unchanged

I don’t think other things would need to be adjusted but you can correct me if I’m wrong.
It would still play a little faster then AoE2DE since the villagers are still a little bit more efficient and also buildings are less durable.
It would kinda feel more like AoE3 since you get power spikes from the free Myth units and God Powers on Age up. The balance between units and buildings would be similar to AoE3 too.

Medium Mode

  • All resource collection rates 0.75x (this includes Favour and all trickles)
  • Villager Train time 1.5x
  • Everything else unchanged

Middle ground between current AoMR and Slow mode.

AoE2 Mode

  • All resource collection rates 0.5x (this includes Favour and all trickles)
  • Villager Train time +25%
  • No Settlements, everyone starts with a Village Centre
  • Buildings 2x HP
  • Everything else unchanged

Village Centres train Villagers -25% slower, with the addition of +25% train time we get 25 Seconds train time for Villagers, the same as AoE2.
This would generally emulate the game feel of AoE2 the most.

Doubling the building HP makes the gameplay as defensive as AoE2.

What do you think?

  • I like the idea
  • I hate the idea
  • I like the idea of being able to play both fast and slow
  • I like the idea but your suggestions are too slow

AoE2 has a game speed of x1.7 and its slowness is not necessarily the reason why the game is popular. Every game has its identity and in AoM there is Autoqueue for those reasons.

Your option is fine as a mod for custom games and let everyone choose (I think there is a slow game mode already), but not for other types of games.

That’s like saying SC2 has the biggest gathering of all the RTS games mentioned here and is the most popular. Each game with its own style.

I know it’s not that simple.
AoM also doesn’t run at 1x speed as far as I know though.

It’s supposed to be an optional mode like some games have a turbo mode or something.

The problem with making it a mod is that it would brake with every time they change any resource collection rates because the mod has to go into into every single unit that has any resource collection rate in it.
Maybe it could be done by adding a modifier to every unit, I don’t know, in this case it would be easy to mod.

AoM is clearly a lot more like AoE in almost every why then SC2.

If you want to slow things down a bit, I think it would be better to buff various defenses a bit such all walls, towers, and fortresses.
