Mongols - Huns
Teutons - Goths
And now all 5 Three Kingdoms DLC civs speak the same language Chinese? That’s 6 civs!
Byzantines and Italians too (medieval latin)
Didn’t bother to research these languages, apparently…
Attila speaks Hun in Night at the Museum. If it’s authentic (which it might not be), perhaps the devs can somehow contact the people who did the research for that so they can give the Huns an accurate language.
He also speaks some siberian language in Civ 5.
I thought Byz and Italian voices were a copypaste., need to double-check that. Romans do indeed have their own latin.
Huns were likely because it was too hard to research back then. Goths likely the same.
The Three Kingdoms civs for two reasons.
1: Wu, Wei and Shu are all just Han Chinese, like the Chinese civ. They speak the same language because they are all the same civ…
2: For Khitans and Jurchens…laziness or rushed. No idea which, but those are the likely reasons, given they researched far more obscure languages than Manchu and Khitan for earlier expansions.
It’s gibberish.
Unless there are some major archeological finds it isn’t any easier today. There’s literally only 3 known Hunnish words (medos, kamos, and stravos).
The next best option could be to give Goths and Huns Gothic voice lines since lots of the Hunnic army would have been Germanic and Gothic does have a couple surviving texts. Or maybe Bactrian since that’s what the Hephthalites spoke.
Hunnic language is unknown and for some reason the old devs thought Mongolic was close enough. Some people think Chuvash would have been better.
Lazy devs maybe? The civ is Goths pretty much in name only. Even Huskarl isn’t a Gothic term.
Khitans speak Mongolic actually, but still wrong.
Wish these two would get non-Latin voice lines as well.
They are still the best standin for saxons so speaking german is fine in my view. Its not that hard to correct it as there was a mod as well.
And I still think they should represent nothing other than Visigoths, Ostrogoths and Crimean Goths.
Slavs and Bulgarians too. But they have different voice actors.
It’s the same Chuvash I mentioned
I predict they’d add original voice lines for the Jurchens and Khitans given that the Khitans were to replace the Tanguts in the Genghis Khan campaign. I heard it was put off. It means they are preparing this now. So, maybe renewing the recent civs come later with their own voices.
There are many regional dialects of chinese and, to reflect the earlier period, they could have the actors speak in a more antequated way if sticking to mandarin chinese. They could have done it.
I guess also 3: they spent their voice acting budget on hero dialogue.
Nice suggestion. I generally like the idea of extending Huns to cover Hephthalites as well (even if they’re only extended in a superficial way like this). Alternatively, elite tarkans look like Gokturks now, so maybe they could speak Orkhon Turkic.
First they need to break their silence..
I have never seen such an awful waste of time idea as that. Showing so clearly that Khitans and Jurchens were just thrown in last-minute.
Pretty much this, given how hero dialogues are insanely long and even minor heroes that are campaign-only have their own voice lines, it’s not just Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian. I don’t know who thought this was a good idea or why they made this DLC so “”“special”“” in that regard, but it’s clear that’s where the VA budget went (down the drain)
This is what bugs me the most about this game. The feeling that everything is just incomplete because for whatever reason that has become established as acceptable for Age of Empires games, that instead of doing the work and including all the things the game needs to feel complete and cohesive there is just all these glaring holes in everything like:
languages shares across civs.
Not all naval units having sinking animations
Shared assets across civs, units, buildings etc…
Civs that do not get campaigns
Historical inconsistencies with unit choices and techs
Lack of appropriate skin tones for different civs
All dark age buildings being generic even though there are some glaring oddities that should be fixed. Like American civs getting a mill with a freaking donkey in it!
Abandoned game modes (Return of Rome) with missing content
How do I put this nicely??? Basically its just… shit.
