IMO, using Generic Unit visuals on certain civs is more jarring.
You could just call Generic Units “European Regional Generic Unit”
Mesoamerican and African Civs would benefit most of having Regional Generic units as soon as possible as the visual differences they have with Generic Units is most visible.
And eventually roll out the rest.
There are already mods ideas showing potential styling, which retains the mostly similar silhouette. So this is not impossible.
Then again there can always be Toggle Option in settings to enable or disable those skins.
Yes, it has already been proposed in this forum several times by various users that, even if we don’t see any more DLCs in the Americas and Africa (hopefully not), at least we could have more units, heroes, buildings, and objects from those regions in the editor. This would greatly help in creating scenarios and would be more viable and less contentious than regional skins seem to be.
The Iberians could have the Caravel and Missionary as regional units, or even the Conquistador. Thus, the Spanish could have a UU (Almogavar) with a more medieval feel and more appropriate for campaigns, thus leaving the Portuguese as the Iberian civ with a early modern/colonial theme.
Regional unit skins would solve 3/4 of the demand for regional units, and visibility may not even be affected if the colour code remains similar for the same unit.
They need to start with regional villager skins atleast. I have created models for regional villager mods but haven’t had the time to complete the animations and render them.
Não, mano. Eu quis dizer o oposto: que mesmo se não virmos DLCs nas Américas e na África nunca mais, o que eu espero não seja o caso, no mínimo poderíamos ter mais unidades do editor para essas regiões.
We’ve had trade carts, kings and monks so it’s going toward that direction. Not regional but we also recently got elite UU skins, so that’s quite a lot of skins that were made recently.
I wish plumed archers would become a regional unit or a shared upgrade for the archer line if only because it’s way too generic to be a UU. Organ Gun has the same problem and there’s also no indication the Portuguese used organ guns.
Yes, they were. Tbh there are so many unit/weapon combinations that could work for UUs and regional units, not just for Africa but for everyone — of course, leaving out the role each would have in gameplay, as that’s a separate consideration. Some examples:
Mounted/Camel/Elephant Throwing Axeman
Light Skirmisher (+ speed - attack)
Camel/Elephant Skirmisher
Camel/Elephant Hand Cannoneer
Spear-and-Shield Infantry
Mounted/Camel/Elephant Xbow
Mounted/Camel/Elephant Slinger
Light Hand Cannonner/Musketeer
Other weapons not yet in the game: maces, throwing clubs, war hooks/whips, blowguns, sumpitan (spear + blowgun) and war bracelets like these ().
Well, the horse + gunpowder combination, which was the big surprise in the Americas, was already used in Conquistador, and the Portuguese were also famous for their heavy investment in technology hence the Organ Cannon. What do you think could best represent that?
And I’d like Gbeto to be a regional unit, because although it’s fantasy, the kingdoms of central and eastern Africa, like Kanem-Bornu and Nubia, used throwing knives.
