Spanish late game Composition

Hi, i’m new to the game and i started playing Spain, since i like them in Aoe2.
I saw that they have some bonuses on archaic infantry, but i don’t see how to use them in late game, since they seem pretty weak, apart from spamming them.
In addition to that, i don’t know which unit to combine with Lancers.
So i decided to open this topic to see if you have some suggestions for spanish composition in different situations. Thanks.

You need the ‘anointing’ letter (Unlocks a missionary ability that makes your troops have better attack). For the late game a combination of dragons + skirmishers + cannons is best. The cavalry to kill the cannons and the skirmishers, and also the culverins and some ‘infinity’ card that give you native allies or wood resources are also important.

Spearmen are very weak against other cavalry.

You’ll want the card unction which makes missionaries boost all your units attacks, with 10 missionaries it’s quite a boost.

Typically when I play skirm I go for the 3 unit composition of Skirmisher, Lancer, Rodolero.
You don’t see spain go dragoons very often just because their cards are upgrade hand cav mostly and rodoleros are great anti-cav with many upgrades.

Just as mentioned above, the Lancer, Rodelero, Skirmisher combo with unction, plus a couple of cannons is the Spanish gold standard. It is worth noting, though, that within the unction range almost any unit the Spanish make is extremely competitive, so do feel free to experiment a little. Just make sure to keep your mass of missionaries close but safe.

personally i tend to favour going musketeer - lancer, with a few culvs or mortars or heavy cannon as needed. lancers function more or less like a mobile artillery piece (being good against all infantry and bad against all cavalry), and musketeers with unction can compete with ashigaru, while obliterating cavalry and any goons foolish enough to get close. skirmishers make a good unit to add in, don’t get me wrong, but the musks are just better rounded and let you mix in artilery safely.

with Spain your late game revolves around 2 general things:

lancers, which have high hp and a good bonus vs all enemy infantry

and Missionaries, who can boost all your units in the area significantly (i think 50% with 10? dont quote me on that)

missionaries means that even your unupgradable units like skirmishers and artillery can still punch quiet a bit above other factions similar unit, all be it there is a cost to pop and you need to micro your missionaries to keep them close enough to the fight.

a general lategame (treaty) spanish army will use: Lancers, rodeleros, musketeers, skirmishers and art. on top of that if available spain tend to use native units since they also get buffed by the missionaries and they dont cost pop.

Unction is the way to go. I wish the Devs would make a Stand Ground stance for Priests so that they stay in formation. As Spain we should also get more church’s in the late game so we don’t have to destroy our church at home to make a new one in the FOB.

I have just played a game and Unction didn’t work. I sent it like 2 times in the game, even if can be sent only one time. Are there some cards/civ bonuses/techs which disable Unction?

@SourishLeader2
You need missionaries near your army after sending unction
You need a slot for the missionary that comes with the card. For that reason you sent unction 2 times. The card wasnt coming cause you had 10 missionaries trained at that time

I’ve had a situation in which I build my priests early (build limit 10) and then when I mean send unction from the homecity it is greyout because the unction card gives you 1 priest and if you have 10 priests you can’t send it. When I see it greyout I think I’ve sent it already, after a few minutes I realise that the aura isn’t working And that I never actually sent unction.

I know, i already used it. I created 10 missionaries and used them behind my army, but this time didn’t appear the aura and didn’t increase the damage aswell.

did you buy the 10 before you sent the card? cause if so the card is cancelled since it comes with a missionary.

Probably i made this mistake, thank you!

An advice!. Don’t get into multiplayer yet. Play campaigns and skirmishes to study in detail each concept of each civilization.
