Spanish Missionaries question

So in Commerce ERA you build a church which lets you make 10 missionaries. You keep them near your military units and they have an aura which buffs them.

Two questions… how close/far from your units should they be to work this magic? And do you even bother with them? I’m trying out Spanish and don’t really see much difference when I use them.

The wiki says the radius is 34. And that it stacks.

Worth noting is the calculation is based on unit current attack value, a spanish hussar with the base 30 attack can be increased by 2.5% to 30.75 by a single missionary, and with 2 will increase it again by 2.5% from that value to 31.52. May not seems much, but with 10 missionary, it is about 28% damage boost, so the 30 damage become 38.4. If the Hussar is upgraded with Imperial stats with no card which make it dealing 60 damage, then the 60 damage will be used as the base number calculation to 76.8.

With 34 aura radius, you can imagine it like the culverin attack range, so as long as the missionary safely guarded, everything will be fine. One more note about it, they are tagged as cavalry, and in formation they are in 1 line with hand cavalry at the front, so always put them in a different control group than your army. For me personally, they start to shine in age4 and up, so not a priority to get it in age2 or early age3.

Oh, and I think the unction is added back in the warchief because Spanish Hussar, Dragoon, Musketeer, and Skirmisher is pretty basic with no unique card or bonus.

To add to this, for anyone not already aware:

Most upgrades (Vet, Guard, cards, etc) are off of base stats. Meaning a 28% attack boost from unction is better than a regular +28% attack card would be on any already upgraded units.

It probably plays better if you need to play ranged units though. Attack ups are generally better for ranged units while hp ups are better for melee units. I don’t play much Spain, but with a lot of melee heavy comps in 1v1 it probably doesn’t get good based on unit comps until later in the game.

I dont understand why they are trained instantly (due to be tagged as cavalry) while aztec warrior priests arent affected by fencing school like in TAD lol.

Current Spanish army feels weaker than in TAD for me, I dont get the point of the HC changes tho.
