Standard Victory in ranked (Wonder & Relic victory)

False. Standard Victory has always been the intended way the developers expected you to play the game. Don’t revise history because you’re deathly afraid of a change that won’t even be noticeable if implemented.

Well yes and I know from an interview that Sandy Petersen is disappointed that people don’t use wonders, but Conquest victory over time has evolved to be the default setting for ranked play. It’s not about the wonders, it’s about the relic condition that’s sadly also on by default when playing on Standard.

Which is why I think Wonder and Relic victory conditions should be separated.

You are the one revising history if you think Standard Victory was the way the game was played in the old days. In the old Voobly days, players would refuse to say “I’m ready!” until you set it to 200 pop, standard resources, normal speed, Conquest victory. And MQ for multi queue instead of SQ standard queue.

False. And the old days aren’t voobly they are MSN Gaming Zone.

I suggest not to focus on whats expectec, but what is currently happening - Conquest is simply preferred by most people.

Also dont really like Wonder victory simply because it encourages defensive style plays which is boring imo.

I dont really mind having standard victory, since what wuold really change? A wonder costs 1000 wood, 1000 gold and 1000 stone.

In which games a wonder could really make a difference:

  • I dont think it really matters for 1v1. 3000 resources to build the wonder and all the time that villagers have to build it (so they cant gather resources in that same time. Building a wonder is really slow, so all the build time will really adds up over time. It is really a big investment. If you can do such investment, then you really deserve to win, since you also would have won otherwise.
  • In team games a wonder it is much impactfull, since team mates can also defend, so the damage is less. So it might be feasable. Still i think it only really works for closed maps or water maps in which you get into a stalement. I do think these stale mates are the most boring games. So i do think it is something good.
  • Relic victories might be more easy to achieve, but is still dont think they are that easy to achieve. For 1v1: If your give all relics to the enemy, then you are already on a timer, since your enemy will get gold in the long run and you wont get it. Relic victory only make that timer visible. That isnt really a big change. It also probably dont effect water maps, since all island will have relics. If an enemy graps all relics, then you are already losing that game.
  • Relic victories in TGs are already more rare. There are more relics and it is harder to control them all. So i dont really think we will see lots of relic wins in TGs as well.

In the end i dont think many will change. Maybe 1 out of 100 games will be impacted. Except for TGs on closed/water maps. There it might be a bit higher. But that is already all impact.

Issue is that there are tons of TGs on closed maps, in particular black forest & michi.

And if it is not impactful, why change something that is not broken?

It will work against the stale mates on these maps. That is a con for changing it to standard for me. These “just spam units” stale mates are not enjoyable to me.

It will add some diversity to the game. You can go for a wonder win, even tho it is risky in most games. So it wont happen a lot.
