Suggestion: Half Architecture sets

What if we introduced new Architecture sets that share some buildings with existing architecture sets instead of being all new buildings?

Western and Central European sets already share a lot of buildings just with different roof tiles.

Byzantine set

  • Identical to Mediterranean set in Feudal Age
  • Mediterranean Stone Wall, Watch Tower and Guard Tower
  • New Fortified Wall, Keep and Bombard Tower (Based on Constantinople)
  • Uses new Byzantine Monastery
  • Used for Byzantines, Romans, Goths, Bulgarians, Armenian and Georgians

Nomadic set

  • Uses East Asian, Central Asian or Byzantine set for some buildings depending on civilisation
  • Only includes House Mill, Lumber Camp, Mining Camp, Blacksmith, Market, Archery Range, Stable, Barracks and Monastery (existing Shrine model)
  • Town Centre, University, Walls, Towers and Siege Workshop are based on other architectures
  • Castles and Wonders are obviously unique
  • Mongols and Khitans are mixed with East Asian set
  • Cumans are mixed with Central Asian set
  • Huns are mixed with Byzantine set

A lot of people said that they thing it would be weird to have buildings like Town Centres or Universities based on tents so why not just use the ones from existing sets?
This also makes the different Steppe civilisations all looks somewhat unique.
One reason why I excluded the Siege Workshop is because the Cumans already have a unique Feudal Age sprite that looks Central Asian.

East African set

  • Identical to current African set in Feudal Age
  • Current African Stone Wall and Watch Tower
  • New Fortified Wall, Guard Tower, Keep and Bombard Tower
  • Used for Ethiopians and hopefully upcoming civs

“Barbaric” set

  • Uses Western European, Central European and Byzantine set for some buildings depending on civilisation
  • Only includes Town Centre, House Mill, Lumber Camp, Mining Camp, Blacksmith, Market, Archery Range, Stable and Barracks
  • University, Walls, Towers, Siege Workshop and Monastery are based on other architectures
  • Castles and Wonders are obviously unique
  • Goths are mixed with Byzantine set
  • Vikings are mixed with Central European set
  • Celts are mixed with Western European set

The set would have more wooden buildings and generally use some more Early Medieval architecture.
Unlike the Nomadic set it would include w Town Centre but not a Monastery.

Why mixing?

  1. Less buildings too design
  2. More flexibility on giving civs the buildings that make the most sense
  3. Making civilisations show their shared cultural traits but also their differences
  4. Utilise some buildings that already fit perfectly like Feudal Age African buildings looking very Ethiopian or Mediterranean Towers looking very Roman

I dont really like hybrid sets

Also the walls of the Mediterranean civs are very Byzantibe

For the Mediterranean civs the wall are good but the fortified wall look bad with their italian Ghibelline merlon, this fortified look bad for the byzantine.

Even more breaking of AoE2’s consistency. I don’t like the idea. No wonder you are a fan of Chronicles.

I’m wondering if we get a Gothic set. Who else could use Gothic Architecture?

You mean Gothic architecture or the architecture of the Goths?
Gothic architecture would be pretty much the same as Western European.

Reskin the nomadic civs house to yurts is always a common request

Maybe also reskin the farm into something like that Khitan’s pasture but in same stat

So should Goths get that set? Or stay as Central European?

I’m still confused about what you mean.

Gothic architecture is a style of architecture that is unrelated to the Goths as a civilisation.

Okay. So this is why you were confused. I didn’t know that.

On topic, I think it will be pretty good step to change the monastery of everyone to fit their irl religion regardless of in game architecture set.

I would really love if we see the stone walls that they use for the byzantine castle actually being used as a stone wall

It’s correct for most civs now just not for East Asia. Ironically the one region being the focus of the DLC.

I’d love that too. It would look so awesome.
After first looking Arabic and then looking Italian we could finally have an actual Byzantine looking Constantinople.
