[SUGGESTION] Locked Gates Visual

I wish gates would visually show you when they are locked so you don’t have to click each one. Can some QoL feature be added to address this?

As an idea, maybe incorporate these things… as depicted in my visual below

  • Change color of lower flags to a slightly muted version of the player color flags above them, instead of bright white
  • Add dirt terrain ground underneath the gate
  • Add tufts of grass poking up from ground around where gate posts enter the ground. Maybe some cracked earth mounds around them, too, intermixed with the grass tufts. All this to help show they are more firmly planted in the ground

Unlocked (how they always look]:

Locked (new ideas):

You know, some fairly subtle yet noticeable visual cue, and something that could be visually consistent across civs.

The lower flags changing color would be good because sometimes you can’t see the bottom of gates; like when other gates or buildings are in front of them. Could maybe even give those lower flags a different pattern (angled stripes or something), if it looks okay, but I think this might be overkill and could easily detract from the notion of subtlety

When unlocked, they go back to looking like they normally do

Maybe remove the flags entirely.

I’ll go for a mod that shows the gates open all the time

Everyday opened door…

What if flags appear only when the gates are open?

The discussion came up on steam a while back.

I do hope something does come from this though.

edit: For me personally, just a simple lock icon hovering over the gate is enough for me but, that is a bit too simple I suppose. (Just my personal preference.)

Naww, I like watching them open and close. Any pathing issues that that vid maybe shows should just be addressed. Open gate would be the cheap/lazy way out. I’d prefer nothing done over that.

I wondered that, too, but I think it will make gates hard to know where they are when buildings, walls, or gates are stacked in front of them.

No thanks. That’d be another cheap/easy way out and not very immersive, imo. That idea is akin to cube resource mod, small trees mod, exclamation mark over idle villager heads, and the like. Boring to look at, non-immersive, makes the game more like playing a spreadsheet than a game in medieval times. That sounds like a mod for people who love those things, which they can make a mod for if they must. I’m wanting a dev-created official and elegant solution that blends into the game world rather than an anachronistic console game or mobile game icon appearing over gates

Just have a little lock icon float above the gate that only the player who owns the gate can see as well as their allies. This could even be a mod. Like something similar to the little star icon that appears above relics in some mods, or the villager idle exclamation mark that appears above villager heads when they go idle etc…

Also another related QOL feature that could be cool is a hotkey to lock/unlock all gates without having to select any of them, that way you can quickly lock all your gates if you are in trouble or unlock without too much faffing about selecting the gates and all that.

No thank you. That type of thing is not for me. I addressed that in the end of the reply directly above your post. I far prefer ideas that can be a part of the setting, and no reliance on HUD icons

That’d be nice. SHIFT+Q or something (if using HD hotkeys like I do, where Q is lock/unlock hotkey)
