After several years playing AOE II DE I have realized that every time they add new civilizations the old civilizations are left behind in terms of mechanics and new game modes, to this we must add that the military units and architectural models are so exaggeratedly globalized that the game has reached a point in which civilizations no longer reflect any originality, everything feels so the same that it almost doesn’t matter if you are playing with Chinese or playing with English because there is not much difference between the two. or there is not something important that differentiates them between one civilization and another, that is why I express my opinion on adding regional units and adding new architecture models so that the game once again has a better quality of life, in addition to the fact that I am sure the civilizations would have a more original appearance and they would no longer look so the same which would make them more fun when playing, I hope to see your suggestions regarding the topic, hopefully in the future the developers will take these types of comments from the community into account
I’ll add that regional unit skin should be optional. And there should be more regional units like Savar, Legionary that are very similar to generic units.
The older civilisations could definitely get some love. Hopefully they will get that in the future where each of them will be a bit more special in content and where every civilisation will have the architecture and unit skins that suits them.
When it comes to new potential regional units here are some suggestions:
(1) Canoe: The Canoe warship that was introduced in the “Age of Empires II HD: Forgotten” expansion could become a regional unit that replaces the Galley line for the Aztecs, Incas, Mayans and for other civilisations whose water vessels were limited to Canoes more or less.
Maybe its upgrade line can go by these following names:
Canoe (Feudal Age) → War Canoe (Castle Age) → Sturdy War Canoe (Imperial Age)
(2) Incendiary Archer or Firestarter: Not every civilisation used catapults and I think it would be a good idea to add a regional unit that reflects this to some degree. As you can already tell the unit that I’m suggesting would be this Incendiary Archer or Firestarter unit which can replace the [Trebuchet] for the Aztecs, Incas, Mayans and Malians for example. This unit could function in a similar manner to the [Arrow Knight] from “Age of Empires 3” where they will shoot incendiary arrows from a long range that will deal extra damage to structures.
They will share the same advantage as the [Bombard Cannon] by not having to pack and unpack like the [Trebuchet], but they will deal a lot less damage than both of them and have to rely more on their numbers in order to take down buildings faster. The Incendiary Archer or Firestarter unit isn’t really based on anything particular from history aside from the use of incendiary arrows, or fire arrows, by various civilisations in the past. And even if not every civilisation used fire arrows I think that a unit like this would be the closest thing to a realistic long range siege option for them, due to the bow and arrow being such a widespread weapon around the world together with the use of thermal weapons. However, if anyone else have any better ideas than this unit then I’m all ears.
(3) Bidaut or Bidower: During the medieval ages both England and France seem that have a used a certain type of light infantry known as the Bidaut or Bidower. Apparently they fought in a similar manner to the Almogavars where they were armed with javelins and acted as shock troops. These warriors did seem to specifically have come from the Gascony region in southwestern France. The term “Bidower” is apparently derived from “Bidaut”, which in turn is linked to “Bayouney”, a term associated with Bayonne, a city in Gascony.
I couldn’t find a lot information about them but I managed to find a video on YouTube that gives some insight about them. The video is a little bit over 1 hour long so it will take time to process it. The Bidower can be an imperial upgrade of the [Skirmisher] for the Franks and Britons that could in addition have some kind of special ability.
(4) Couillard: I originally suggested in previous posts that this catapult could be a unique unit for the Franks, but after learning a little bit more about the Couillard it seem to have been a widespread weapon among the European kingdoms, so it could be available to most of them or just a few such as the Britons, Spanish, Italians and Teutons aside from the Franks. The Couillard was a smaller and a modified version of the counterweight trebuchet that is believed to have been invented by the French. Instead of having a single counterweight swinging between supports on either side, it had a split or two counterweights passing on either side of a single support.
Perhaps the Couillard could be available during the [Castle Age] and where they will have the special ability of doing more damage when deployed near friendly buildings. The image below is of the Couillard trebuchet:
I support this as always. Would be nice to mention the people who created the pics you are reposting

Exactly, it seems totally incoherent to me to see Aztecs with war galleys or Chinese with European knights, that’s why I took the initiative of exposing this suggestion in this post
That could also be a great idea, the important thing is to give more historical representation to civilizations so that they stop looking the same with the same repeated units
