Tbh, I feel worried about the future of the game

These are reasonable criteria, but I think the entire community should decide. It’s the only way to make the majority opinion clear to the devs.

This is so dumb. By your own logic we could also include Papua New Guineans from 2026 into the game since they are somehow “not from the modern era” and everything is relative.

The point isn’t how advanced each civilisation is, the point is the boundaries contain the civs to a time period where at least there is some historic overlap between most civs so that when they fight against each other it feels authentic. Like you could imagine that battle actually taking place in reality even if its fictional. Its what gives media like a game based on history a certain level of immersion. This is why we don’t want a game where ancient Egyptians can fight Mongols from the 12th century for example.

+1.
I see the issue, the factions we have so far lose their historical flavour,
while not offering much in terms of gameplay.

For example just Scotland and British with new gameplay from Ancestors Legacy/Company of heroes,
would add so much more to the game. Be able to lead squads, build tall grass to hide your units, traps like dig in pikes, day and night which alters vision. Have digging teams, to move units underground like GLA/zerg. That could make game much more appealing, than some whacky native civ with medieval skin.

As long as units stick to the aesthetic of swords, arrows, wooden wheels, wooden carts, slings, shields, and late age hand cannons and cannonballs (as latest tech), I think it’s pretty okay. I feel some wiggle room is fine there. But I’m not a history professor or someone who needs exact history to be unfolding before my eyes in the video game; just a game player who likes the medieval-like aesthetic for AoE.

If we start seeing rubber tires, jeeps, fiberglass or metal boats, uzis, AKs, hand grenades, radar, planes, and jets, then I will definitely worry

Honestly, that would be fine for a non-AoE2 game. Sometimes you just wanna smash action figures from different eras together.
