Would you be happy if Relic removed quick match making from PvP and asked you guys to go arrange matches between yourselves on reddit, discord, forums etc?
No but you are missing my main point. My point is that what you want is very specific. You said you wanted long games. Unfortunately you can neither control your human opponent nor the AI opponent even if it was a better AI. That is what I meant. If that is what you want, specifically, you need to find people who want to play like you want.
The thing is that the original hardest AI was perfect for this sort of gameplay.
The new cheater hardest is too tough in dark and feudal age (but still surmountable if co-op players like me engage in a balls to the wall defensive gameplay in the initial stages, which we do not enjoy), and then when it gets to castle and imperial age, it is actually dumber than the original hardest AI.
it is actually dumber than the original hardest AI
You see, the reason you are saying that is because the new cheater AI has more resources to showcase its incompetence. It was always like that, but now you can see it easier because it repeats the same stuff more often and consequently the pattern becomes more recognizable
No man, dumb as in, it just gives up on life. If I somehow survive to imperial, and I roll into their territory to inflict long standing trauma on the psyche of their entire civilisation, and what I see is villagers standing around a mill doing nothing. Soldiers just hanging out in bunches beside production buildings. Theyāre all zombies in imperial. The original hardest AI was not so bad in late game. I seriously think they unintentionally broke something when they made it 2x.
Yeah, call anyone who disagrees with you as a troll and attention seeker, ignore other peopleās well formulated opinions while providing none, create an echo chamber and letās see how far that brings you. How about you link us your steam profile and show us how much you have played?
I think you should make a topic and report this on bugs forum.
Maybe you are right on your observation but only devs can recreate the same issue if there is any. This could create more problems than before if this issue slip through cracks.
hardest AI (the old one) actually helps people get better. once you reached a point where that was too easy, then yes youāre right. in my case, when i transitioned from Hard to Hardest, i had to get better at defending early rushes and had to learn how to take control of the map. Hard AI makes some dumb, half-assed, efforts to take the map, but i mean⦠they build one TCand mass like 40 vills on one resource, then build another TC on another rsource node⦠thatās stupid and weak. the old hardest did that, but with towers, some minimal army support, some keeps and did it way earlier than Hard AI, meaning i had to fight for those resources as early as possible⦠Hard doesnāt teach you that. Hard teaches you to build good defenses and have a standing army in castle age, then when your starting base has no mode resources, then you go take the map⦠donāt worry, resources will still be there after the 30th minute and will be virtually uncontestedā¦
Hardest made is so i had to be ready for a rush in feudal, albeit a small one, but one big enough to punish me if i didnāt have any defenses or standing armyā¦
Let us suppose that your shirt size is a size 40. You go to the shop and they show you a size 50 shirt. You say itās too large for you. Then they show you a size 30 shirt. You complain that itās too small for you. You ask them why it is so difficult for them to just give you proper size 40 shirt?
The shopkeeper then goes, āI really donāt understand you. If size 30 is too small for you, maybe lose weight until it fits. If size 50 is too large for you, maybe put on some weight. Do you also complain when game devs make decisions that remove appropriate AI difficulties and replace them with AI that are unsuitable?ā
Hereās the thing though, in AOE4 you are able to ālose weightā, by just practicing and getting better. And if itās too difficult or itās ruining your enjoyment of the game, you can just⦠Play an easier difficulty. Or turn the game off. Nobodyās forcing you to play the hardest AI. OP is complaining that itās ruining his enjoyment of the game. Then maybe make the game enjoyable for yourself? Jesus Christ.
This is like ordering the spiciest sauce at a restaurant and complaining itās too spicy.
But the point of karthikriyerās analogy is that there is no size 40, and thatās a problem, because thereās such a big gap between hard and hardest right now.
Iām in the exact same boat. Hard is way too easy and Hardest is way too hard. Sure Iāll get better over time to maybe one day beat a hardest ai as they are currently, but I want to enjoy myself as I do that, not feel underwhelmed at playing against hard AI or completely smashed against hardestā¦
Itās like being constantly matched against players that are either absolute noobs and are playing their first game, or playing Beasty/MarineLord⦠Thatās not going to be very enjoyable
I have now reached a stage where I can beat the Cheater AI if I try hard enough and play in a very specific manner. But that is not enjoyable. I can play the hard AI instead, but thatās far too easy and again not enjoyable.
This has to be the most inane stament Iāve seen on this matter. What even does this mean? Gautam Buddha.

No, this is like ordering the spicy sauce at a restaurant, and the chef decides that heās just going to dump in 2x the amount of spice for no reason and then insisting that you enjoy the dish.
Is there any reason why the regular spiciest version is removed? No. Why not leave the regular spiciest dish as it is, and add in your experimental cheater spiciest dishes to the menu as a separate dish?
Yes, what ELO do we think can beat Hard? Maybe 600? And the old Hardest could be beaten by someone around 800 ELO? Whereas now we have a Conqueror 3 who canāt beat the cheating Hardest, and even one of the best players in the world has to resort to various ways of exploiting defects in the new Hardest AI to win.
I have now reached a stage where I can beat the Cheater AI if I try hard enough and play in a very specific manner. But that is not enjoyable.
Problem solved then? Itās supposed to be a challenge and the enjoyment comes from overcoming the challenge. If itās not enjoyable just donāt do it.
What even does this mean? Gautam Buddha
It means if youāre banging your head against a brick wall and not enjoying it, you should probably stop.
the chef decides that heās just going to dump in 2x the amount of spice for no reason
What are you even on about? The name of the setting is literally Hardest AI. Why are you surprised itās hard!?
If Hard is too easy but Hardest is too hard, go online and get matched according to your skill until they inevitably patch the AI.
Thatās not problem solved. Enjoyment comes from the journey too, not just from the destination. The way the game plays has to be enjoyable too, not just the accomplishment of completing it.
Because it cheats! You could make it cheat 20x too and technically still call it āhardest AIā. You can technically do anything if you want to act so obtuse.
The play style against humans is totally different to the play style against AI.
I have to ask, do you even play against AI majorly, or are you one of those clueless PvP try hards that just wants to have an uninformed opinion on AI without understanding the pov of people that actually spend their game time playing exclusively against AI? Because the lack of understanding you have on this topic of AI is astounding and paints you as someone who majorly plays PvP.
I really donāt understand some people. If Hardest is too hard, then maybe play against an easier AI? Or improve until you can beat the Hardest AI?
Do you also complain that shops sell clothes in sizes other than your own?
Man, sorry to say but this is one of the dumbest arguments Iāve seen recently.
In fact, the next thing I would ask myself is why did they stop at 2x resource and didnāt give the Ai 2x production speed also. It would make the AI even harder! So why not?
You do realize that from a logic and programming point of view, this āfixā for AI is just a band-aid? Why? Because if you want to make a harder AI, it is HARDER. You have to take into account the triggers and make the AI adapt accordingly. And there are many cases in this game that fit there.
Itās like a sales company that places a threshold for sales for itās employees somewhere that high that youāll need to cheat somehow to get your bonus. Is it abuse? Yes! Can you quit, ofc. Is that the solution? Not quite.
Iāll give you another example, maybe youāll understand (in case you are not just a troll). How about a weight lift competition. For gold, youāll have to lift 1.5 tons. Nobody forces you to go for gold. You can stick to silver. But silver is way too easy. And gold MUST be reached by normal means (if you work hard) but not impossible.
Just because you can win by using cheese tactics, doesnāt mean it is fun, or harder, or smarter. It is just there to say āitās hard to beatā. Artificially that is, but it is.
