This is to cut the units * Because combat was planned to occur in the Discovery Age, most of the infantry and cavalry units from the civilizations in the base game had four visual updates created for them. The majority of the Discovery Age models were cut, though a few European civs units like the Skirmisher and Halberdier utilize their 1age models instead of using ones meant for later Ages. Some units, like the Cuirassier and Lancer, only use two of their four visual updates, as they first become available to players starting with the Fortress Age. While the intended usage for the models was scrapped, the assets remain in the files and can be modded back into the game, as almost all of them appear to have been finished by the time they were cut.

Does this mean that all those units were available in the (then)Discovery Age?

Well, iirc the initial plan was to only have 4 ages, like the other games, and already have combat in age1

Personally, I’m glad there’s limited age 1 combat. With the additions of explorers and treasures they managed to make age 1 intense and engaging in a way I just don’t see matched in AoE 2 or 4.

I always find it a shame that the late 1400s to the end of the 1500s content is relegated somewhere squeezed into the Commerce Age which is rougly the 1600 - 1700s (la la la, I’m ignoring you, Mexico and US!), whereas the reality is globally, there were some really exciting things happening (Europeans and their renaissance, early colonial escapades and their transitions from knights & mercs to national armies are just a drop in the ocean).

What I’d give for lines of 16th century Arquebusiers, Calivermen, Halberdiers (and Billmen for the Brits!) supported by Demi-Lancers and Men-at-Arm cavalry fighting.

But… I understand the direction they went, especially with the initial Colonial theme - exploring the land, establishing trading posts and ties with native forces and finding valuable resources et all. Whilst that’s not necessarily the sole theme now, it would most likely change the gameplay significantly if there was in fact combat from the beginning now.

I do like the idea of it being an alt mode though…

I’d say they are “skipped” by the series. AOE2 generally ends with hand cannons and in AOE3 it is a period with no military.

This is an era with pike and shot, a mixture of lance and pistol cavalry, big varieties of unconventional artillery from huge to small. But these elements are scattered around the game (which is mostly centered on 18-19th century) in all kinds of unfitting places.

Of course, logically the pike and shot era fits better within AoE 3 (within the Age of Exploration) but by focusing it from the start on the colonization of America and not having combat in the first age, this period skips directly to the colonial era (1600-1715), which is when AoE 3 separates from AoE 2…

That is true…luckily we have the historical maps of the 16th century to “represent” the pike and shot era…

“Shrine” aka “Medicine Shrine” - Ritual dances and ceremonies to benefit the tribe. It looks like a fountain, maybe unfinished, no textures. But I can’t call this an analogue of a Europeans “Сhurch”. Another dance around the Shrine??? This model have a “Medicine” name, and would be suitable as a “Field hospital” for the TWC civilizations.
“Mercenary Hut” - analogue of a Europeans “Saloon” for the TWC civilizations, also no textures.
“Capitol” for Aztecs
And amazing “Native Embassy”

I am not a developer. I have a beta CD the “Warchiefs Preview”. And I wanted to suggest these ideas out to FE. But it looks like nothing will happen after the DLC cancellation.

Nah, they already confirmed that they couldn’t do anything, Retold and the Chinese DLC took up too much of their time… and then maybe they’ll go back to 2 DE to make a normal DLC and then Retold’s second pantheon… that is, AoE 3, screw them, really screwed…

Found voice lines for a female russian explorer in the game files

I don’t think it’s been used in the game yet. Russian explorer cosmetics are currently limited to two men and the bear.

In a PUP there was a female Russian explorer skin that eventually got replaced with the bear.

I was looking forward to that hero skin so I was disappointed it never came out. The bear skin is pretty funny though.
