The Age of Empires III Cutting Room Floor

Wouldn’t say insult but imo it’s kinda cringy. That’s how I also feel about the majority of event mods in AoE 2 with only a few being actually quite cool and useful, whether it’s the AoE 3 ones (Musketeer skin, Gunpoweder sound) or adding bullet tracers to gunpowder units.

Poland-Lithuania and Denmark are now on the cutting floor

Found a description for the cut Iceland Map:

On Iceland teams find themselves on opposite sides of an enormous, beautiful volcano located in the center of the island. Iceland is very mineral-rich, but for an adequate source of food, players must take to the surrounding ocean. Since this region does not have many trees, players will need to collect and refurbish wood from the many shipwrecks along the coast. There are no trade routes in this remote region, but players may choose to ally with the Oldenburgs to gain an edge over the enemy.

Two years later, we actually have some explanation. Sandy Petersen’s holding a AMA session over on AoEZone and Sandy was asked about Grand Conquest:

Question: Can you tell anything about the planned Grand Conquest game mode from the original AOE3?
Sandy – yes, the idea was we’d divide up the New World into different maps. Then you’d get 4-8 players on each team. Then the players who’d gotten together for a game would have a battle in, say Texas, and the winner would “own” Texas. There was a lot more to it, but it was kind of like turning AoE into a battle system for Risk or Axis & Allies.

This would’ve been definitely a step up from Rise of Nations where you were only fighting 1 AI opponent.

I’m not going to lie - that sounded awesome.

I think even if it was ‘like turning AoE in a battle system for Risk or Axis & Allies’, it would have been fine as an isolated mode.

Sandy also talked about the original design for the Home City as it got eventually simplified for the final game:

Yes, it would be like the New World campaign of RoN but more complex…

There’s just as much good game design in cutting & simplifying features as there is adding new ones.

I’m not sure if the DE devs got that memo.

Kind of an interesting idea about having a meta-game for aoe3 about building up your home city between matches, almost like an rts-rpg hybrid with a hero you level. You can see how levelled card unlocking came from that idea. Could be a really good way to make playing more matches compelling, but as we saw in reality it made it so players who had played longer had advantages over new players, which really hurt numbers of incoming players. Maybe if they had made it so you could only battle other players on a similar meta-level to you… but then you’d be fracturing the playerbase really hard.

The idea of a city being your RPG character that you use to fight instances of skirmishes around the world is really interesting. Not only it allows the city to grow vertically (power, size, etc) but also chronologically through the centuries (something that is usually absent from RPG games).
Are there other games that do something like that?
Is it similar to AoE Online though? From what I remember it seems a bit like it.

Yes, that’s right…in AoE Online you do missions that give you gold coins, with those gold coins you can buy special resources in the global market with which you can build buildings in your capital, which you can customize as you want by moving your buildings from here to there…sometimes in the missions they give you unique buildings that you can put in your capital as a reward (example when you finish the Trojan War missions, they give you the Trojan Horse to put in your capital to see whenever you want)…

In one of the previous messages you were advised to talk to Sandy Peterson. I registered in AoEZone and just asked a 10 questions (about the cut TWC content) to Sandy Peterson, and I can quote them here, but Sandy won’t answer. The AoEZone moderator did banned me without a reasonable reason - Spam…

UPDATED
Thank you very much for unbanning and understanding!

He will answer that all of that was to simplify the game and that the Aztec campaign was not made due to lack of time, just as they did not include the Incas in TWC due to lack of time… In October I am about to make a DLC that will remake the Pachacuti, Moctezuma and Almeida campaigns for AoE 3…

Hey, sorry you got banned, that was a mistake.
I’ve unbanned you now, so you can ask your questions

huh neat, Makes reminds me of the sierra city building game. By the way he is saying that, seems like the homecity building part will be like a mini/side game

It was so close too…
