I think the main point is about costs. Archer cost no food; so, you can spam archers and go to castle age quickly but if you spam skirmishers or scouts, your castle age time will be delayed. Defending archers with archers is the best option at feudal, no matter you have a archer civ or not.

These stats are a month old now as Aoe.net is down. Archer opening had one of the lowest W/R for a while though.
