The decline of AOE 2 DE

Yea I was referring to the nightmare of the original game (lv 150 go brrrrr)

Yes, you needed a lot of patience to build a good deck xd…

I have been playing this game ever since the Conquerors days, and I even played some ranked in DE between 2021 and 2023. When I reached 1000 elo, though, I felt like I accomplished what I wanted, and ever since then, I haven’t played ranked that regularly, only time to time to try out some civs. Wu was kinda broken with Jian and Pikeman combo in my elo or crazy Khitan eco and their cavalry play, for instance. I’ll try it out these champi shenanigans soon, too, on ranked. Anyway, I’m an old timer, and I’m happy with new additions and changes even though they are not balanced properly at first. Not a huge fan of 3K’s addition, but when it comes to the games, I prefer changes and more additions. So, apart from the 3K disaster, I’m happy with the game, actually. I welcome the new south american civs as well, they are quite fun. I returned to the game with HD after playing lots of AoM, Red Alert 3, and AoE3 from the RTS genre back in the day. In the end, more content makes me excited and gives me an incentive to return to the game.

I feel like game is having a momentum!
However the continuous addition of Civs and content that do not belong to AoE II trademark is more of a threat than a opportunity for grow. Devs should stop it

Why Im saying this?

Please take a look back on Victors and Vanquished, TK, Return of Rome and previous DLCs
They release unfinished, bugged and not-related content for the game. even worse releasing them as a pay addition (Yes V & V, Im taking about you and the majority of your scenarios that can be played for free), releasing stuff that do not belong to AoE II core gameplay (Antiquity Stuff that belongs to AoE I, WarCraft-like heroes as in TK, Flemish Revolution as AoE III ones, and so on and so for.

Adding more Civs yeah it could be great for representation but it hurts players specially the Newcommers. You must learn a lot of Unique Units, Bonuses, Unique Abilities, Unique Buildings….. you get it right?

In addition, a lot of balance problems that already exist only will keep growing as the content addition
This has been the achilles heel of AoE III for years. Are you sure is the right move to keep releasing Civs?
No, is not!

TL;DR
Now the game is in ā€œgood shapeā€ but addiding more DLCs will make it worse. I truly believe it

Yes, I have so much content that I always come back to the game…

Yes

Yes, as every other game you must

You are screaming at a wall, a mindless nostalgic driven wall, people dont want this 20+ years old game to change or improve and, at the same time, want it to be relevant

You simply can not see the whole picture

why do you act as if nostalgia isn’t a valid reason to like a game? I am playing a game from my childhood, of course nostalgia is a huge factor in that. Some of these changes are damaging my enjoyment of the game. I have a right to complain, and to demand that they don’t force these massive changes on a product I bought.

But aside from that your argument is deceptively reductionist. So many of the complaints have nothing to do with nostalgia.

we are complaining about (among other things):

  • bad balance
  • dishonest communication
  • new civs being janky
  • thematically bad additions (fantasy campaigns like 3K)
  • chronologically strange additions (why aren’t RoR and chronicles their own standalone games?)
  • price gouging
  • major bugs remaining unaddressed

so claiming ā€œoh it’s just people complaining because they are nostalgicā€, not only devalues a valid reason to like the game, but completely ignores all the valid arguments that aren’t about nostalgia.

Not really, I don’t think there is enough people who either think 3K civs where a right choice, nor that the game is perfectly balance or the price is right and so on (at least here)

You are reading it as you want, with the interpretation that you want, and is wrong

I can’t stand the constant whine anymore, is TIRESOME, and don’t act like you are against only those things listed above, is against almost ANYTHING

The devs don’t owe you to believe you are entitled to your solely perception of what makes the game good (even if you pay for that, you are not the only one who paid for it :person_shrugging: )

By the common sense things, yes, of course the game can be more balanced, should incorporate real civs instead of whatever 3K was trying to do, have better prices etc, am I denying that?

NO

But man, you don’t like anything and the things you like ARE GONE, and let me remind you SNARE IS HERE, REGIONAL MONKS ARE HERE, REGIONAL CASTLES TOO, and there is no amount of whine that will make them go away and I personally like those things and hope for regional RESKINS and the pro players can suck a lemon and cry rivers for what I care, is not THAT complicated to learn a 20 years old game

Again, it does not invalided common sense claims

Just yours

Because it’s better this way. Chronicles adds a ton of assets that are also used in recent campaigns, new mechanics that come to aoe2(wood trade) and more. You can play unranked against friends with or against Chronicles civs and that’s great.

Also, earlier you said you don’t complain about Chronicles because they are not in ranked and now you do….

auras need be remove, it looked weird in history game, not a magic game.

Its not magic things like drums horns banners were used in real war to motivate or give commands to troops. How do you suggeset this game gives something like that without auras?

I don’t mind chronicles much, it bothers me that adding these spin-offs get priority over bug fixes

Chronicles and RoR should have been developed as updates and DLCs for AoE I DE,
Now we have a game with no identity, a game that doesnt know if is Medieval, Prehistoric, Classical, WarCraft, Bathroom or Whatever

Not true. Chronicles is made by a different team.

Also false. Now we only have one client that gets alle the updates. Less work for the dev temas and more assets for everyone. I really don’t understand what bothers you if you don’t use it.

doesnt matter who works on it. they decided to invest in more content instead of fixing core issues.

You simply can not see the whole picture man
This additon hurt the game more than helped it

How? If you only play ranked, how is it influencing your gameplay at all?

Its almost as if you are just another one of the several MILLION consumers and not the center of the universe.
