Why are you following the crappy trend of AOE 4 of turning all upgrades and late age units to gold colour? Whats the logic behind it? It looks ugly AF and AOE2 DE never had readability issues. All units looked like they had practical armor made from real life historical material references. Now we have every thing turned into pure gold. The readability is completely gone. AOE2 DE is clean, well designed, minimal and Simple. Please stop this and revert it or allow us to turn this off.
Please pleas please, revert this change. We don’t want AOE4 coming to AOE2. AOE2 is good and it’s clean and straightforward. We don’t want the over designed looking units from AOE4 and every bloody thing turned into gold.
What the heck are you guys even doing this looks disgusting and cheap and looks like some cheap mobile game.
Who is even giving a Yes on these type of trash concepts?
Please stop and revert it, please This looks ridiculous.

It’s supposed to be gold-plated, not solid gold. But yes, they use it far too much, while most would look great if using steel or bronze.
It’s very stupid on shields (for the berserk notably) as shields were considered disposable, it was expected to break a couple ones during a battle so each warrior brought some spare ones.

I agree that they have overdone it with the gold but most other aspects of the upgrades look nice.
Your image is kinda misleading because some of the units are pretty golden in their none elite versions already and Chronicles units don’t have elite skins yet. Also it’s probably bronze in that case and not gold.
In a few cases it might be bronze instead of gold.

Be happy that they are not doing this at the same time

Well if you compare the frankish throwing axeman’s axes (which I’d describe as dwarven double battleaxes) with what they threw IRL (light single throwing axes weighing around 600g), it’s not far
it’s also a thing in Age of Mythology. Through the four ages you go through stone, copper, bronze and iron technologies. And the third age military upgrades are kind of silver, and the fourth age military upgrades make your units look gold.
It’s everywhere in the franchise.
Gold is cool.
But seriously. Maybe less gold.
