The only thing that worries me more than the recent DLC-s

I am not buying this argument.
aoe2 was #40ish of steam top sellers during the recent sale.
It is permanently in the 100 game by concurrent player count.

this isn’t some small game made by an indie dev, but a main stream game backed by one of the wealthiest and most powerful companies of human history

I have a theory on why so many users are accepting this DLC.

It seems that lots of people in this community see AoE as an extremely niche franchise that is incredibly old and struggling to stay afloat. Something that is completely false, if we consider Microsoft’s statement that the franchise had 50 million players in 2023.

But because of this erroneous view, people think that the devs desperately need money to keep the servers alive, and if one DLC flops the game will die, so they will give as much money as they can to make sure it doesn’t. They really believe they’ll stop mantaingin the servers if the game does badly, ignoring the fact that AoE1 is as dead as a game can be, and it’s servers are still running.

But they apparently don’t know, and will give “pity money” to Forgotten Empires, not caring if the new product in question is trash, but instead they’ll pay for “future support”. Now, paying for something that doesn’t even exist yet is a terrible idea, but they buy anyway.

We should remember that loving a game doesn’t mean you must accept it’s flaws, but rather push it’s creators to fix it, so the game can be the best version of itself. And this DLC is a pretty bad omen…

Dudes, chill. It’s just a game.

It’s just a game, but that doesn’t mean it’s fine for Microsoft to pump out shitty DLCs that gullible players will buy for (real) money. I like the game and don’t want it to be shit, it’s simple. I can always move on to another game, but I prefer it when the things I like are not ruined.

Yeah I bought Mountain Royals, maybe it’s not the best, but there’s no way I would class it as a bad DLC. And looking through all the civs added to the game since 2019, I’d say they’re mostly great.

I am more worried that we have more like this kind of recycled DLC in future if there are still fairly many players buying it. Personally, I don’t want this kind of DLC in future so I will not buy it even it is at 90% discount.

So one guy’s opinion on the internet is just as valid as the opinion of some other guy on the internet, so I bring this up not to argue.
Ornlu’s most recent tier list, would not agree with your assessment.

–Edit–
I had a screenshot of ornlus final tierliest but it keeps getting censored. IDK why. if you’re interested you can find it on youtube.
–End Edit–

Complete civs are S - Tier, and Almost There and Power crept are basically two different tiers where the balance is just a smidge off.

So of the 15 civs that Ornlu believes need more significant changes, 11 of them are DE era civs, which I found interesting.

I believe the devs only want to get money from us, but it’s illegal to directly asking for money, so they made a so called DLC as an excuse.

Isn’t that what a subscription is? Pay some amount every month to play the game?

They cannot make people subscribe a game they already own.

You prefaced your comment by saying my perspective is just “one guy’s opinion” as if it’s a bad thing, then you literally retorted with just “one guy’s opinion” as the preferred alternative.

I would ask you to specify what about this statement asserts that your opinion is bad because it is only held by you.

I even explicitly stated

I would ask you to specify what of this phrase indicates I’m attempting to refute your point.

I would ask you to specify what about this statement asserts it’s preferred?

Because you used Ornlu’s opinion to refute mine.

Repetition, renowned through the ages as being absolutely 100% identical in every conceivable way imaginable by everyone who has ever existed, to making a better argument.

I see.

Let me clarify that

is not the same as better. You can check the definitions and look through the synonyms if you’d rather not take my word for it.

I don’t like it, but it’s definitely not a scam

Look, I love Ornlu, he’s literally my favourite AoE YouTuber, but he’s VERY biased towards old civs, he doesn’t even try to hide it

You know exactly what i was getting at. Saying “interesting” in that context very clearly comes across as aloof and sanctimonious. Why even bother mentioning that Ornlu rated 11 out of 16 new civs as needing work if it was completely irrelevant to my point?

Because I thought it might be an interesting starting point for discussion. This episode has certainly been interesting, but a discussion not so much.

Disagree on this. It needs better infrastructure to support people who want to play it but it’s a better remake of 1 than 1DE ever was. And they’re still rolling out free ports of the old campaigns as post launch additions.

Mountain Royal is 50% more expensive than Dynasties of India but offers half the content.
The newest DLC is not only a lie but also a scam. 15 of the scenarios are already available in the workshop for free. All this for 13 dollars, for more money than 3 civs with 15 brand new scenarios.

Agreed. New one in particular is pretty bad for the price I plan to make them sweat and buy it at a discount.

IMO the dev team should take a full year or maybe a little more and cook up a full blown expansion pack, something they could confidently sell for 30 with their whole chest. 4+ new civs, architecture set, campaigns a plenty, new assets and improvements to scenario editor. Something BIG.

they are finishing an unfinished port
