The removal of the term 'colonial' from the game. Why?

@Hohlenwerger

Hear hear! At least someone here who understands how history works

When the game was launched there were no native civilizations in game, but all playable civs where european colonists. But with the addition of native american civs it is just odd that they advanced into colonial age which didnt end that well for them as colonized. It is as easy as that…

They also never had a Fortress, Industrial or Imperial Age, so should those be renamed too?

Spot the difference  In AoE2 Huns also got an imperial age with Paladins and castle age with castles.

AoE2 never claimed to be “historically accurate” or make changes to be percieved as such.

Spot the difference yet?

There is difference between lacking historical accuracy and insult yes. Thank god you spotted it.

Honestly, the idea that only europeans colonized during this time period is incorrect. The aztecs and the inca are literally the second and the first biggest native american empires ever. So is the Qing dynasty for example, which was the biggest China ever got. So did the Mughals, who were the biggest non-european power, who took over most of India.
And even if that doesn’t convince you, being in a Colonial Age doesn’t necessarily mean establishing colonies, but also resisting or observing the creation of one. Like how you can be in car, while not being the driver.

The Qing Dynasty colonized numerous islands in the South China Sea, even islands that had already been colonized by previous powers, and even committed several genocides.

Just research on Taiwanese natives, and how they used to look like, and then compare them to the modern inhabitants of the island.

Colonial age wasn’t changed because not all civs had colonies, as in the same way not all civs had industries nor an empire, and those names didn’t change. That’s why i think the change isn’t really about changing the name to something that identifies better with all civs.
As for colonial militia changing to revolutionary I see it more like part of the whole revolution rework

It was just a political move, nothing else.

Murdering people is bad. Any time that occurred in history, it was bad.

This game is basically role-playing murdering people. It’s best not to think too much about it. But the original concept for the game was too Eurocentric, and they’ve tried to make it more international. It doesn’t affect the gameplay so don’t worry about it.

Although i answered the other changes, i noticed that they also changed this in the intro video:

Because it’s current year of the feefees and game developers don’t want to potentially offend anyone.

Even though this is a remake of an extremely successful game and nobody who actually plays the games would care.

This is the dumbest explanation.

There is no reason to change this.

History is being rewritten.

It’s pretty obvious that culturally sensitivity was an afterthought, as other Native American civilizations weren’t given the same treatment during their implementation. Even the changes they seemed proud of were just lukewarm attempts at dismantling stereotypes, at best.

Believing that the developers kowtowed to some SJW cabal is laughable. Equally laughable are people complaining about historical revisionism in a game that’s never been historically accurate, which goes double for their previous portrayal of Native Americans years ago.

It’s not dumb at all. It would be dumb for the makers to listen to whingers who are going to buy the game anyway. Listening to the wants of other groups isn’t “pandering to SJWs” - it opens up the market to more people.
