might even make sense to split this into two topics: one for the DLC one for the patch

Not changing Saxony and Henry the lion to Saxons in Barbarossa campaign is not great.

Most overhyped DLC

Imma copy paste my comment from elsewhere:

the older scenario civ changes they did:

  1. Bari 3 (Loose Ends) Varangian Guard changed to Varangian civ

  2. Saxon forces in Hastings changed to Saxons.

  3. Wessex in York changed to Saxons

  4. Danes in Finehair

  5. Wessex in Ragnar changed to Saxons

  6. Saxons in Vortigern

  7. Saxons in Charlemage.

That’s it. What they didn’t change:

  1. Any of the Saxon duchies in Barbarossa 1 and 2, or Henry the Lyon in 4.

  2. Player in York scenario being changed to Danes, since we’re establishing Danelaw. Any of the other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to Saxons.

  3. The red Norse player representing Uppsala and the Southern Jarls representing the Geats in Finehair were not changed to Varangians, despite them both being in Sweden.

  4. Bjorn Ironside, despite being a Varangian AI name was not changed to Varangians in Ironside.

  5. Vikings in Otto which are squarely situated in Denmark were not depicted as Danes

  6. Northumbria in Ragnar wasn’t changed to Saxons, the Jomsviking faction was not changed to Danes (and the Jomsvikings don’t use the Jomsviking unit) nor was Ragnar changed to Danes or Varangians, despite having been a Danish and Swedish king, in addition to appearing as an AI player name for the Danes

All in all, subpar work in my opinion. If the developers wanted to so narrowly focus on making both the Swedes and Danes properly viking in design, why did they not bother adding them into the scenarios depicting their viking period? I’m honestly not impressed by their design choices here.

Balance Patch 22.09.2026 - Update 185872

i’m just guessing, reasons might be:

  • they don’t want to give too much access to the new civs to people who haven’t bought the DLC
  • they want to leave some scenarios where the player can play as vikings
  • they don’t know how to distinguish between Vikings and other viking factions
  • they don’t care

And no Saxons in Charlemagne!? I’m a bit disappointed.

EDIT: They did! It’s in the update.

it feels like they want to restrict the Saxon’s identity to Britain, away from mainland Saxons

Now Chieftans is sorta just a worse Garland Wars

yeah, the only advantage is that it costs less gold and researches faster. I’m still glad that the anti-fun “gold-on-kill” mechanic was removed

It’s funny because for a long arse time because of Primas worthless strategy guide back in the day I thought Garland wars was +4 and +6 vs cavalry anyway

I just tried to plead back in the day to make Bersekergang give all Viking units regen but Cysion and I quote said that it was hardcoded… does anyone know why he lied to me so flagrantly only for the Berber UT to make him a hypcrite

  • Adam isgreen said “everything we are gonna [the changes made in DE] show is togglable”, with Cysion sitting right next to him
  • he said “we are not going to split Chinese” straight up to camera
  • victors and vanquished being “polished” and “inspired by community content”

when I last called the devs liars, i got suspended. So I won’t call them that, I will just let their lies speak for them

Seems like this is their only DLC that isn’t part of Family Sharing (“This game is excluded from Steam’s Family Sharing service”).

Later edit: Looks like they fixed the issue. Thanks all.

I thought I added it in, must’ve skipped it thinking I listed it in case of Vortigern.

Still, too many failures to change civs to what they should be. And I suspect they’re gonna mess up a lot of civ appearances in the Harald campaign.

Crossil Yeah, I whish they had changed the Xi Xia from Chinese to Khitans in Temujin scenario…

Holy bruh. I hope this changes soon.

I mean that’s understandable, but this is a campaign that used Goths to represent Austrians, surely Saxons representing slightly the other Saxons wouldn’t be as weird?

Has anyone figured out yet whether the longhouse serves a purpose, or is it just a decorative object?

Actually, it makes sense. The Saxons are based on the Anglo-Saxons, not the continental Saxons.

Decorative.

Old Saxon Confederacy, or at least the pre-Carolingian Saxons are depicted as Saxons.

I still think that there was an argument for making northern Germany Saxons, even if the devs decided to be stupid by making it only about Anglo-Saxons. Even besides this, a good cut-off point could’ve been after Henry the Lion, when the stem duchy of Saxony was broken up.
