From the video of the dev interview with Beasty, they seem to mention around 1h29m that Forgotten Empire was working on Knight of Cross and Roses, while Relic is working on the DLC that will be released this fall.
I think this is excellent news because first it shows that Relic is still working on the game. And second, it explains why the current DLC only has variants (Forgotten Empire don’t have the resources to make all the voice overs and new models), which means the Relic DLC most likely has 2 completely new civs (with maybe some variants), since Relic are usually the ones capable of creating new civs.
Just wanted to share this positive news / speculation.

It’s true. Knowing the tendency of developers to leverage every element left behind by the previous DLC for new civs (usually through campaign elements), I don’t think they’ll waste the idea of unique units from the Templar-allied civs to avoid creating new civs.
And the most likely ones would be: Spain, Poland, and Venice.
The only thing I hope is that with all the incredible “historical representation” Forgotten Studio has done for the new DLC, including a Templars Civ without gunpowder as historically happens, if the next DLC is developed by other groups, including Relic, they’ll LEARN from what they did well and apply it to future expansions.
And this isn’t just about variants, but about new civs themselves “properly” represented; Even the Byzantines and Japanese also had flaws in their historical representation for the Sultans Ascend DLC:
Byzantines
-
Many historical mercenaries are unavailable: Including the Almogavars of Aragon, Genoese Crossbowmen, Venetians, and Armenians.
-
False mercenaries: Grenadiers of China, Javelin Throwers of Mali; they are too far away from Constantinople to even be considered possible. Instead, the Byzantines should have been given a javelin thrower and grenadier of their own, as a sort of “special troops” contract instead of a “Silk Road” contract.
-
Anachronistic Mercenaries: Streltsy of Rus (1545) is anachronistic; the Byzantines became extinct in 1452; when they can replace them with another lightly armored European unit for the Imperial Age, that would be ideal.
Japanese:
- Onna musha is a reference to Tomoe Gozen, but in reality, most japanese horse archers were men.
- Mounted samurai attack with the blunt end of the weapon (Visual Bug): They attack with the blunt end.
- Japanese stone walls are Chinese walls: they still need a unique model.
- Handcannons? No, they need Ashigaru Muskeeter or Arquebusiers! The tanegashima landmark has his name for something, the arquebus they invented, but even with that, they DIDN’T have it in the game.
The worst mistake, for example, that they could EVER make in the history of the game, would be to make the Almogavars “Heavy infantry”, when they were Light infantry.
THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!
Almogavars were Light infantry, ever, EVER!!! Remember that!!!
Aside from that, yes, I would like to see new civs.

They probably worked on both DLC in parallel so i don’t think there’s any secret meaning in this one that shows what comes next. They will probably go with the civs that are most requested for next new civs, which are Danes, Spain and Aztect. Maybe Korea or Khmer.
