My favorite game in the franchise is AoE III followed by AoM but when it comes to AoE II DE it has one huge advantage over any other game in the franchise and that is single player content thanks to so many campaigns. AoE IV has things about it I like more than AoE II DE such as civilizations being more unique as well as having infinite Food from Farms and Gold from trade that doesn’t require teammates for example.
Aoe5 more likely than people moving over to stupid aoe4. People don’t play an RTS game for history, voicelines or variety in graphics. There are games with better graphics and aesthetics for that. RTS is played for planning, strategy prediction and decision-making aspects. This is why Aoe2 has been very successful. Anyways hope to see you in 10 years when you won’t be a kid anymore and understand why people stayed with aoe2 forever.
I think AOE-4 could have been the best in the series if only it didn’t focus so much on eSports as a skeleton for its design. AOE-2 was never designed to be an eSport, and neither was Starcraft, but it’s something that comes naturally if the game becomes massively popular. It shouldn’t be forced.
For example we have buildings with worse scales than in AOE-2, and units without siege operators because “old games were like that” or “they confuse the player”, when there were already precedents of this in AOE-3, and some AOE-2 units.
Perhaps AOE-4 could have enabled the construction of bridges, water mills, dairy farms for European civilizations, etc. as new mechanics in the series.
So ultimately there is no real incentive for players to abandon AOE-2, or AOE-3. since AOE-3 has more mechanics than AOE-4, and there isn’t much new stuff for AOE-2 players either.
As an AOE-3 player, it’s hard for me to put myself in the shoes of an AOE-2 player, and I guess it’s hard for an AOE-2 player to see things from my perspective as well.
I think that as far as many AOE-2 players are concerned, AOE-3 and AOE-4 are two disappointments in a row. While for AOE-3 players, AOE-4 feels like a step backwards.
I originally saw AoE 3 as a disappointment when I tried it years after its release. I bought the Gold Edition that only had vanilla + War Chiefs and my disappointment mainly lied in not being familiar with the game as many concepts seemed strange to me. I tried it again with Definitive Edition and it’s meanwhile my 2nd favourite Age game right behind AoE 2. Playing AoM that came between both games made me further appreciate AoE 3.
AoE 4 on the other hand I was absolutely hyped like everyone else when it was announced and released, I even got the chance to play it prerelease for its companion book but my hype for it kinda died down the first couple of months after release when I saw how slow crucial bugs were tackled.
Still, I consider it a game good enough to play maybe 1-2 games every few months.
I would like to create a thread on AOE-2 about what things you like/dislike about AOE-3. For example, I find it incomprehensible why AOE-2 players don’t like something like minor factions or mercenaries. I don’t know if the era of the setting is also unappealing to them, where gunpowder weapons are often predominant over archaic ones.
This is the largest AOE community after all, and your thoughts and opinions will continue to influence future games.
Deer push only becomes relevant when you aim for build orders with tight timings.
You can push deer in AoE 4 as well btw, but just like in AoE 2, it’s overrated.
Btw, what do you think about (deer) herding in AoE 3?
bit of counter arguement, aren’t the variant civs the definition of copy paste as well? also the massive upcoming DLC is completely in the dark content wise, i’ll go with 2 new civs, 4 variants 1 campaign, massive refered more so to beasty’s sales expectations
also bit of reality check, aoe2 and other og aoe games have lan multiplayer options, aoe4 doesn’t so when the servers are shutdown for aoe4 at some point in the unforseenable future its game over pretty much while the classics will still persist via lan networking
