It is The Viking Saga.
As expected, personally very disappointed tho the only good thing out of it is a Harald Hardrada campaign…
Varangians
Saxons
Danes
So actually all overlap with existing civs once again.
One is even an occupation…
I guess I find myself in the era where I will be switching between disappointment and excitement.
Mountain Royals - Excited
Three Kindgoms- Disappointed
The Last Chieftains - Excited
The Viking Sagas - Disappointed.
At least I got the campaigns right. i.e Vikings in Eastern Europe.
Terrible DLC idea…Only Harald Hardardra is the good thing out of it.
After doing a quick check, I see the Varangians mainly came from the Sweden area so I suppose they will probably use them as a standin for Swedes, in a way that can also cover Rurikids and Varangian mercenaries in Byzantium. I…guess I kinda get the thought process, but i’m still pretty meh on it.
I’m happy to see Saxons, Danes I can take or leave, hopefully we get Danelaw content of some form, that would make me more favorable to seeing Danes seperate.

The Varangians consisted of Goths, Swedes, Normans, Rus, and Angles (Danes), and came around the baltic sea area. Their distinctive feature was that they were byzantine mercenaries serving the greek emperor, at least I haven’t seen them mentioned much outside this context in Icelandic (“viking”) sagas.
So we once again have a situation where one group can equally be represented by 3-4 overlapping ingame civs. In other words, I can feel the HRE city-states DLC already…
One is even an occupation…
So was ‘Vikings’ so there is at least some consistency.
Halleluja! We can have our medieval lord go on his forest hunts for his lord’s table!
Also moose, beluga whales, seals are in. I wonder if bulls are added as a separate unit herdable too?
So the next DLC would be the Chronicles then this year?
The latest update was talking about what’s coming to ‘age of’ games for the rest of 2026, no mention of chronicles so unlikely to see it this year.
Do you know if Barbarossa campaign was touched? In theory Saxons representing Henry the Lion might feel a bit anachronistic, but this campaign already features Goths as Austria so it wouldn’t be far off.
Viking Saga release Fall, pre-order late summer, as they said in the announcement. Which let a window for Chronicle at the end of 2026 or early 2027. They did not say it was “All” of what’s to come, but a Preview of what’s to come.
However I think they’re shifting Chronicle 3rd dlc to 2027, because it’s Rome dlc, so maybe they’re spending more time on this one than on the others, and will be a big release covering the entire rome story but with way more than 18 missions. We’ll have to wait to see for Chronicle, right now it seems the vikings are the focus.
It’s an interesting choice to give those new vikings the crossbow mounted unit, probably regional replacement of the cav archer. But I’m surprised that it’s the Viking that will receive this specific unit, I’ll have to dive more into the mounted crossbow history to learn more bout that.
It seems there is no new sails for the viking, or maybe they’re doing that during the time between now and the release.
Lots of new viking themed unit, I’m already seeing insane custom scenarios with all of those units to make damn crazy viking cutscenes.
As expected, those new viking civ receive the Catapult Galleon. That model really made sense for the vikings to receive them. The hull design was very specific, and was obvious to me that some viking would receive them someday.
Longship getting back their animated sail <3 Back like in the original game. So maybe other unique ships will receive animated sails.
Longship wrecks, some land unit tracking longships to move from a water spot to the other. Some stone “menhirs”, some new trees, viking tents, Elk, dead trunks, torches, wood bridges, viking weapon racks, longhouse castle / imp age on two orientation. I also spotted some sea weeds. Possibly a new rock too, with moss. And also viking flags but that’s obvious !
Crossbows weren’t really a thing in Viking Age Scandinavia. Perhaps Mounted Xbow will be just for for Saxons and other Western Euro civs?
Yeah I was thinking about this, like the rocket cart beeing a wider replacement. Maybe the Mounted Crossbow will serve as a replacement of the cav archer for some european civs, and that would be fine.
It would makes sense then to have the viking having it, more as a “game balance unit closer to their lore” than the nomadic horse archer style. Anyway I already like the unit, I’ve been waiting for a mounted crossbow since the day I saw a fanmade concepte of one on reddit.
So we’ll have to wait for the pre-dlc patch to really know, I’m expecting a huge balance patch to drop in august, like the one before the Three Kingdom dlc, introducing some key features that the dlc will use on the new civs.
Oh and by the way… The Viking Sagas DLC is the #4376980 one, so we still got that unkown #4073510 we know nothing about, while #4374720 is the next chronicle.
Highest res I managed to find:
Longhouse, I’m assuming a scenario editor building due to the rotation variation.
The only building doing that currently is the Gate, and I doubt we’re going to have a regional longhouse thing able to rotate. (and as It exist in feudal, castle and imperial age variant, to me, it’s a scenario editor asset)
