We have Teutons and Teutonic knights since Aok.Italians who are genoa have genoese crossbowman. If we ever get a swiss civi the uu would be swiss pikeman.

Btw Jomsviking is a real historical soldier type.

Both belongs to same civ.

Yeah, and?

Like Magyar Huszar. But Swiss are not getting Teutonic Pikeman, are they?

So it should be Vikings UU.

What does Vikings represent now when they are split?

Current Vikings civ represents Norway, while from what I can tell the Jomsvikings were associated more with…Denmark.

That’s why Jomsviking are for the Danish.

See the word Viking more like a profession rather than a people, it’s like “A Marines”. You got the US Marines, the UK Marines, that’s abit like that, Jomsviking are Viking from Jomsburg (or something like that).

And for the Varangian, they were a group of vikings too, I mean calling the Viking Viking is not stranger than Varangian the Varangian.

I know. Hence they should be renamed as Norwegians to avoid the confusion of ̶M̶a̶g̶y̶a̶r̶ ̶H̶u̶s̶z̶a̶r̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶C̶u̶m̶a̶n̶s̶ ̶U̶U̶ Jomvikings as Danes UU.

Goths didn’t have crossbows, neither did the Irish Celts iirc.

I’d keep Sicilians with the Cav Archers, it’s one of the few elements that reminds you they are actually from a contact zone between Muslim, Greek, and Latin worlds, not from Normandy up north.

Not a fan of adding them to the Scandinavian civs either, crossbows only became adopted there long after the Viking Age.

Norse sounds better than Norwegians.

Still doesn’t work. This forum is a mess.

My theory is purely based on the screenshots and not on history. Maybe it’s an aura building. But aura buildings wouldn’t really fit for civs like that.

Maybe it’s something crazy like a building that generates free units. Basically a Feitoria for units instead of resources.

I feel like Chronicles will not just focus on the Punic Wars and it’s likely we will go all the way up to Caesar. The Punic Wars are popular with history nerds but everyone has heard about Caesar and Cleopatra. Though that would require at least 4 new civilisations (Romans, Carthaginians, Ptholemaians and Gauls/Celts).

If they split the Romans into Republic and Empire again like they did in the mod they still need Legionaries at the end of the Republic too.

It doesn’t say that those regional units are necessarily accessible to all 3 of the new civs. The Mounted Crossbow makes no sense at all for Vikings, Danes and Varangians.

The Varangian Guard might just be shared between Varangians and Byzantines.

They are fighting Italians there though.

Mounted Crossbowmen (M2TW unit) - Total War Wiki The Danes used the mounted crossbowmen but they should also go for Franks, Teutons etc.

Yeah, I meant they wasn’t used in the Viking Era. On the other hand, Joan can train Throwing Axemen, so whatever.

I am hoping the Chronicles goes in this way. Would make some sense given the limits of adding too many civilisations per DLC.

The Rise of Rome: Republican Romans, Etruscans/Italiotes (both new building set), Carthaginians, Numidians (both new building set), Iberians —> Italian consolidation and Punic War focussed.

Dictators and Consuls: Seleucids, Gauls (new building set), Pontus, Parthians and Ptolemies (new building set) added - Focussed on conquests of Marius, Sulla, Pompey and Caesar (updates to the Republican Romans will come in too)

Vikings represent Vikings, while Danes and Varangians represent the fact that some manager decided this year’s expansion theme has to be Vikings even though AoE2 already has Vikings.

Norse/Norwegians. Duh.

Question is, did they use mounted archers with recurved bows ? If no, then they are candidate for mounted crossbow.

No no no.

Hannibnal Crossing the Alps, they Can’t miss that. Neither they can miss the massacre at the Battle of Cannae that nearly destroyed the Roman Empire.

Yes the first punic war is abit nich, but the second punic war is History.

They will cover the Punic War.

I’m not afraid that they won’t cover it. I just think they will go all the way to Caesar.

The first Chronicles also had 3 campaigns. So maybe it could be:

  • The Pyrrhic Wars
  • Punic Wars
  • Gallic Wars

Or something like that. New civs being Roman Republic, Carthage and Gauls.

After abit of research, I’m thinking the Mounted Crossbowman will be spread on non viking civs.

Many european groups used them during the late middleage, including French, Burgundian, Teutons, Italian, and others.

It seems they’re designed to be anti-infantry, but I hope they also get a small anti cavalry bonus, as historically they were famous for countering armoured knights, thanks to the crossbow punch power.

On the other hand, the Varangian Guard could be a replacement for the Spearline. This idea is only based on the absence of spearline units on the screenshots / gif so far for the Danish and Varangian, but we all know it could be irrelevant and just design choices.

We know they’re Shock-Infantry, generating gold, but their axes were historically used to deal with cavalry so I hope they’re getting a bonus. Especially if they replace the spearline.

For the Longships, I doubt they’re getting a full “pack/unpack” mechanics, even if that would be damn cool.
I’m more thinking of them as a water version of a Cav-Archer, moving fast, shooting bursts, a raiding ship.

Danish will probably have them one age earlier, others may have more power / sustainability based on their civ gameplay design.

My take looked like this:

Mounted Crossbowman: regional replacement for the Cavalry Archer, available for Italians, Franks, Teutons, Portuguese, Spanish, and Burgundians, as well as Andalusians. Slower speed (1.35) and rate of fire than Cavalry Archers, but more armor, 7 Pierce attack, and +2 attack bonus against Infantry. (The Heavy upgrade has 8 Pierce attack and +3 attack bonus.)
