Unique Ships for different Civs

Wasn’t the Monitor always an ironclad since it first made its appearance?

Based on the information that I have managed to find, the Monitor is a type of ironclad ship while the in-game [Ironclad] unit is based on another type of ironclad ship known as the Casemate ironclad. The difference between the two is that the Monitor carried its armament encased in a separate armoured gun deck/turret, while the Casemate ironclad exhibited a single (often sloped) casemate structure, or armoured citadel, on the main deck housing the entire gun battery.

Casemate ironclads also generally tended to be larger than Monitor ironclads.

Yep, Monitors are categorically the incorrect name.

They were coastal/shallow water ironclads with turrets.

Regarding proper Ironclads, I guess Ensemble Studios just took an American perspective on them, using the coastal/riverine sort from their civil war. Everyone else in the world were sailing around in proper Ironclad ocean-going ships, which is totally what a Frigate ‘evolves’ into.

More annyoingly the Monitor description refers to Bomb Ships / Bomb Ketches, so I’d love to make a request for the name to change. If anything it’s more relevant and helpful - Bomb Ship conjures up the images of a ship firing bombs. Monitor…well, not so much

Of all that is proposed in this topic my only concern is how this would affect the performance of the game.

Chile had steam corvettes since atleast 1855

The South American nations purchased many ironclads from European ship makers. In addition mexico had some, and even Haiti had one for a certain period of time.

Yep, I think it’s fine that they get ironclads.

Although it further iterates that the Euros should get some sort of Ironclad vessels, considering they were not just producing them for their own navies but for those across the Atlantic!

Yes. I agree 100%. Ironclads and predreadnoughts represent the final main battleship evolution of ships in this time period along with cruisers, and yet we do not see them. We only get a Casemate riverine ship in the style of the civil war. That was not a popular style in Europe.

Aditionally, torpedos should be represented somehow, if even only as a tech in the foundry.
