I have to say I’m sorry to the mods for contributing to giving them more unnecessary work by losing my temper and escalating the dispute rather than enduring, and I’m also sorry to @TrustfulMango90 because the thread will probably be locked for some time while the mods clean it up because of us. I can just hope it will be reopened afterward.

EDIT: In the end it wasn’t locked or cleaned so I decided to at least remove my own contribution so my messages don’t polute an interesting thred. I still think it should ACTUALLY be cleaned.

I started with the idea of just using the original victory conditions and dialogues and stuff, not touching them too much. I also wanted to use only AoE2 units that were present during the AoE1 timeline. No pikes, no halberdiers, no trebuchet and so on

Makes sense. I think the big question for me is whether you should get Samurai. They didn’t exist during that time period, but precursors to them did, at least in terms of their equipment – so they’re probably closer to being accurate than any other infantry units. I’d definitely want bows (e.g. AoE1 composite bowmen) rather than crossbows as well.

I’ve read through the entire thread and think that it was overall a normal discussion, just with some confusion about terms.

(Mod mode off: I btw think that Dark Age and Antiquity don’t fit together. Dark Age is usually refers to the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the early Middle Ages)

We could have a 6 scenario campaign centered on: Ambrosius Aurelian(us) or even “King Arthur” (yes, we push it a little too far in here).

I like this idea. Unfortunately, we lack records from that time to a full campaign. But a scenario for the Battle of Badon could be quite cool.

Yeah, definitely. The best candidate for a “Roman” capaign. Or maybe a composite campaign also featuring Stilicho and Flavious Aetius, even if they were already the rivals in the Goth and Huns campaign.
It would a sad and poetic campaign, with three men who were close to restoring Rome’s greatness but were betrayed and killed by their own.

You could argue late antiquity and the dark ages sort of overlap since late antiquity is generally told to be from 200/300 AD to 750 circa while the dark ages are a little later (I guess 400 circa to 1000?).
So if you take the term “late antiquity” literally (something I wouldn’t personally do) you could argue that antiquity ends around Charlemagne era.

Anyway those are not “historical facts”, those are just we humans trying to fix and categorize the endless variety of history. It’s not that the pope while electing Charlemagne yelled “bye bye antiquity”. Reality is a stream, not discrete states, that’s our mind trying to order the world like we do with language, logic, maths etc.
So I personally think as a matter of method is generally wrong to take this kind of periodization literally (be literal in general is kinda stupid unless you need to deliver a point pragmatically and rapidly because circumstances need it which it’s not the case for an aoe2 forum where we just speculate and that’s it). That’s the same reason why people were against Romans in aoe2, because “middle ages start in 476 when they fall nooo!!” Ignoring all sorts of shades and cultural changes happening both before and after that not too meaningful date.
A fact is: Romulus was the western Roman emperor deposed in 476 by odoacer.
An interpretation is: this is where middle ages start.

How do you call a person that when in telling them a joke they interpret it literally instead of getting the point? Well that’s the same in any other circumstance in life.
