What is the skill of playing Arena?

if you are right it simply means that the two players dont have accurate elo, ie their elo hasn’t settled on their respective accurate values yet

I absolutely have no build order…Not i even tried before…And i have 1.6k 1v1 Ranked elo…I played most of the maps besides water maps…Open maps has its own strategy close maps do it’s own.So Maybe you are all about to do some feudal rush and win the game with few units…Arena takes often more and more deep strategies.You can even see siege onagers 11…
I love playing both open or close games…Tatars for open Turks for close rocks for me :wink:

Some players are probably more consistent than others, but the math of TwerDefender is not wrong. By the way Elo works, lower rated players win 1 in 3 games on average if the rating difference is only 100.

If your next 100 ranked games are against the same player who is 100 Elo behind you, and you win more than 2 in 3 matches, then after these games you will be more than 100 Elo rated above the other, to more accurately reflect your winning chances.

When it comes to ur elo understanding there is to say few simple things…Like 800 elo players gonna hold his own against 1.6k ? You lost ur mind or what ? Arena like close maps requires it’s own gameplay…Even you can surprise your enemy with feudal tower rush (that can destroy the walls) ‘‘i did and worked few times’’
Probably u are playing arround 1.2-1.4k 1v1 ranked who thinks he is decent in game but in fact knows only few tricks with BO …

It is “not wrong”, but it misses the key factors. The only randomness you have in chess is the player color. Sure you have different openings, and defenses, (and each of these matchups with a different win/rate) and millions of different sequences, but that’s all up to player’s decision in-game.

What I think Eliza is trying to say is that ELO in AoE2 isn’t that reliable of a predictor, unless the difference is very high. Sure, if both players of roughly equal skill and random civs get to play hundreds of thousands of games in as many different civs, then you might see a trend in the win/rate to be very close to a 50% for both. But in practice that is not very useful, and things such as map generation and game balance are definitely more important than 100 ELO difference.

This is a game about build orders, mate. You’ll see the same on Arabia. It’s just that on arena, things are more predictable. On Arena, Fast Castle + Castle drop / Monks / Massed Archers is more common. It does not make sense to fight in the Feudal age in such a map… and yes, the Turkish fast imperial strat is also viable.

Franks do this even better.

Also, Castle dropping can be deterred by making a scout & putting both your scouts on patrol, making feudal age archers, maybe getting town watch. Pretty easy to do as Britons, by the way.

You do know that monks can prevent a building from going up if they’re near by, right? Like just keep right clicking all the villagers. The villagers attempt to evade conversion and this overrides any amount of right click micro the other guy does. Also, once the castle goes up, monks can convert the unique unit. I’ve had Spanish and Byzantines castle drop and send in their unique units… only to have them converted.

Arena is an easier map for those who like to boom. No need to worry about scout rushes, archer rushes and so on. Siege Onagers on Arena? I didn’t know that. Thought they were a black forest, michi, amazon tunnel thing.

Bro… that combination hard counters almost everything in the game. Halberdier + Siege Onager can only be countered by another civilization with a strong Siege Onager / Bombard Cannon + Halberdier combo… like Koreans. or Bohemian Houfnice + Halberdier… but requires micro, Eagle warriors with micro, Longbowmen + Warwolf Trebuchets… maybe Cataphracts.

I think Khmer units also die big time to Monks. Do rams have bonus damage vs. Ballista elephants? I think they do
