The original design already took huge liberties with the source material, though it it still had a roughly human shape with its four limbs. It was kind of a Lovecraftian interpretation of what the mythical figure might look like and the acid tears were an appropriate embellishment for a many-eyed creature. The Retold version, on the other hand, is completely out of left field with its weird spider arms and fins. Also, it vomits acid now? It’s a bizarre choice, and its design is so specifically weird that I suspect there must be a reason but I can’t for the life of me imagine what it could possibly be.
I was wondering the same thing. I can only assume the original was too cartoonish for their vision. They seemed to be going for scary monsters gather than silly monster. It always vomited acid, only difference is in the original it was an instant kill that ‘melted’ the unit away into a pool (I miss that 
)
Frankly, I think the new version with its big toothy mouth looks far sillier than the amorphous Lovecraftian dfesign of the original.
