What’s wrong with The World’s Edge?

As they already said “we made up this DLC news to make you feel included but we never thought of working on it”, debating on profits and player numbers is meaningless. This is discrimination.

Even if their decision is indeed based on profits and player numbers, it is their biases against this game that caused its low profits and player numbers (if it is true).

Wait a second, oh my god I’ve figured it out.

This is EXACTLY like the Rooney Rule but INFINITELY STUPIDER.

Who does all of this over a video game? An ostensibly live-service product that’s you’re supposed to advertise and turn a profit on…something that only happens IF YOU ADVERTISE AND SERVICE THE PRODUCT.

Indeed, your comment is very accurate.

It’s probably the last dlc along with the other one they promised, they’re going to maintain servers and that’s it, numbers wise it was a failure, blame it on whatever you want, aom at the moment is a numbers failure, aoe4 will be the same if it doesn’t improve. They’ll only keep aoe2 and that’s it

I cannot trust World’s Edge any more.
After receiving the DLCs I paid for when I purchased AoMR, I would never do any business with them again.

I will never buy the Chinese DLC in the mythological era, even though I am a Chinese. I know I’m just an ordinary player, but I don’t want my small money to be used to pay wages to the worlds edge.

nothing but truth to be found here, who knows maybe one day even aoe2 numbers won’t be enough to please the suits

They better not cancel Immortal Pillars!

If I haven’t commented until now it’s because there have been like 20 topics about the same thing, and no title seemed specific enough to comment on the problem in a focused manner.

At least this one is questioning why the DLC was cancelled, so here’s my theory:

1.- LACK OF MONEY.

While the strategy of making it Free to Play with limited features to attract new audiences really worked and increased the number of players, it wasn’t enough.

I’m skipping any problem or triviality that could be scaring away new players, but apparently there aren’t enough people who bought the game, and it’s taken “Too long” to release new DLC.

If we consider that in reality the teaser was a lie and they had nothing, then not even the writers had any idea. And paying writers without ideas to make a DLC out of nothing, was not profitable for them.

2.- WRITER’S BLOCK

Continuing the previous one or complementing it, I think that the rumor of the new civs that was leaked from some game file, “wasn’t real”. They were new revolutions or “discarded” ideas that were left in the editor, one of them was to turn Sweden into Denmark, but since they saw that it didn’t make sense, they discarded it.

However, as the developers’ response mentions: They felt forced to include AoE3 in the event, and that’s why they included 2 flags. But it was an oversight, they really didn’t have ANYTHING.

Then they told the writers that they made 2 civs based on those ideas. I have suspicions that they got Writer’s Block, and on top of that they were already working on other ideas for other civilizations, and they didn’t advance this idea enough.

They were still paid to develop ideas, but the reality is that they couldn’t finish them. Finally, since progress wasn’t made on schedule, the order was simply given to delay the DLC. And now the order to cancel it, because the artists have no ideas on how to make it happen.

I wouldn’t blame them for that. In that case, if you have more ideas for the game, other than for those civs, it will be well received, the game still has a fandom, which will buy the DLC.

Discussion

In any case, I will wait for more DLC to be released at some point, and hopefully the game can feed on new players to continue maintaining the multiplayer servers.

On the other hand, the game still does not have the ability to create “Custom Campaigns” in the Editor. I think that limits the creativity of the same fans, who would have created some Napoleon or Spain fandom campaigns a long time ago otherwise.

Finally, it is the opportunity for the MOD “Age of the World” to make its own Poland-Lithuania and Danish-Norway civs in Fandom mode.

This part sucks the most.

F2P drew a lot of players. They could easily ride the momentum with a DLC before the new players get bored. That should have been in the plan way before going F2P. But it turns out they threw themselves into the F2P mode totally braindead, unprepared for any success, and unwilling to make urgent adjustments based on the outcome.

AOE3DE and its F2P mode should go down in textbooks as a great example of total failure of project management and pacing.

I fear they’ll miss the spot with the AOMR DLC again.

They just don’t like the heretical game Age of Empires III, and are enthusiastic about humiliating players, responding to them with a year long radio silence, and criticizing the player community’s unrealistic expectations

Considering the quality that AOTW is handling, it is worth the wait, but to avoid AOTW modders being overwhelmed by impatient and angry people with the current situation, I will mention that there are already mods for both civilizations.

These are mods from 2022, but I hope they work well and I hope this helps give more visibility to modders.

We have a lot of talented and passionate people in this community, I hope more mods will soon emerge that make it clear that this game and its community will never die. :v:

Just feels like they always hated the time period AoE III focused on. They were always more interested in sanitizing history than in helping us explore it.

At least do your research right

Age of Empire 3 DLCs is done by Forgotten Empires, not World’s Edge, at least do your research right

which they also help with AOM DlCs and AOE4 DLCS

World Edge help made AOE3 sure, but they didnt work on any of the DLCs

Check their Page

Imagine complaining about the Devs, but you keep saying the wrong one

It seems like there’s a fundamental misunderstanding about the roles of The World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires in the development and management of Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition and its DLCs. Let me clarify:
• The World’s Edge is the publisher and overall manager of the Age of Empires franchise. They oversee development, decide on the direction of the game, and ultimately have the authority over what gets made, when it gets released, and whether something gets canceled or not.
• Forgotten Empires and Tantalus are the actual developers who work on implementing those decisions, handling game updates, balancing, and creating the DLCs, but they do so under the direction and constraints set by The World’s Edge.

So, while it is true that Forgotten Empires and Tantalus are responsible for actually making the DLCs, they are not the ones calling the shots on whether a DLC gets made or how it is handled post-launch. This is why, when something goes wrong, players often criticize The World’s Edge rather than the developers, as The World’s Edge holds the ultimate decision-making power.

Additionally, if you’re coming from an Age of Empires IV perspective and engaging in the Age of Empires III community with a dismissive or antagonistic attitude, it’s understandable why people might find that frustrating. At the very least, if you’re going to comment on these issues, it’s important to do proper research before making definitive claims—otherwise, you might come across as ignorant, irresponsible, or even intentionally misleading.

Don’t try to argue with them. Wait until it’s their turn. Then celebrate. Just wait. That’s all we can do.
