What to do with the classic civs (Franks, Britons, Teutons....)?

And trains faster due to their team bonus.

Yes, I think the Scots in AoE 4 will use Gallowglasses as a replacement for the MAA… in TW Medieval 2 they have the Highland Nobles and the Border Horseman… so in AoE 2 we could see something similar…

So one of the few civs know for 2h swords shouldn’t get the 2h sword

I knew there was some reference. But this sheep stealing is definitely less renown aspect of Celts than invention of chain armor.

Would be interesting if a chronicles celts faction would get this tech free.

Gauls?

I wonder how they’ll name the Chronicles variant of Romans… Will we get a two-word civ for the first time, “Ancient Romans”? Or will they be “Latini”?

I’d be curious to see it, just to give people who are trying to make sense of Italy an even bigger headache

SPQR is a nice name too.

All this Celtic and Roman stuff sounds sorta Chronicley

Roman republic (500 BC to the Marian reforms so no legionaries) and Roman empire (from the Marian reforms to the reforms of Gallienus who gave way to the late army you see in the medieval game) if it’s like the mod they made. It’s chronicles anyway so it doesn’t need to be coherent with the main game (it already isn’t). If it’s only one Romans then just call it “Romans” with a different emblem or maybe “Romans (chronicles)” if it’s really that confusing.

Latins feel off and made for the sake of the rules but again rules are different for chronicles and rules are good only when they serve an idea, not when an idea must serve rules just for the sake of consistency.

I wanted to throw in, as I just checked how many of the worst 10 civs from sotls “worst arabia civs” are civs with different openers/builds.

Armenians, Burgundians, Cumans, Georgians, Inca and Saracens

all have uniue bonusses that need adaptations to your builds to make them work. So it’s not only affecting casual/new players, it’s actually influencing the overall winrate - and quite a lot. Severel of these civs are actually top picks (ok maybe not so much on arabia, but on other types of maps) on pro level.

I think this underlines very much the point I tried to make earlier about these kinds of unique stuff that affects early buildorders. In worst cases they make the civs terrible on the ladder for most elos whilst they can sometimes even be broken on pro level. It’s a mess resluting just of inconvenience for no reason. I would actually promote here to try to make all these bonusses smoother, similar to what we have done to chinese. I think this would only benefit the game and make it more enjoyable and especially improving the learing experience for newer players.

Camel Scout and/or Dark Age Market for the Saracens? And maybe even more HP for camel units.

A slight change in my Vikings idea. Norse Warrior should replace Long Swordman, not THS+Champion.

Berserk
Cost reduced 65 food, 20 gold → 60 food, 20 gold.

Technology Tree
Fire Ship line is removed.
Long Swordman, Two Handed Swordsman and Champion are removed.

Norse Warrior is added and replaces Long Swordsman, Two Handed Swordsman and Champion.

Norse Warrior
Upgrade cost changed from Long Swordsman (150 food, 65 gold, 40 sec) → Norse Warrior (125 food, 75 gold, 40 sec)
Gets +3 Attack bonus vs Standard Building.
Speed increase 0.90 → 0.96

Elite Norse Warrior
Upgrade cost = 650 food, 350 gold and upgrade time 75 seconds.
HP = 70. (+14 from civ bonus)
Attack = 11
Speed =0.96
Attack Bonus vs Shock Infantry +8
Attack Bonus vs Building +4

This unit can be a regional variant like W.Hussar if there are multiple Nordic civs.

Well, Vikings is very likely will go through a small to heavy rework. Let’s see how that goes.

Are you sure?
I hope we finally get rid of the free hand cart tbh. And similar eco bonusses to other civs that just make them “good” without putting in any thought or effort for an actually good civ design.

(ofc there are different opinions what a good civ design is. But for me just slapping an absurdly strong eco bonus on a civ isn’t.)

the idea of vikings is that they have an easy economy, so you can fully focus on your below average military

for that an eco bonus that doesn’t require any thought is good. not all eco bonuses should require a lot of effort to unlock (in fact most of the original eco bonuses don’t require any effort)

the only eco bonus I would agree on being utterly bland is the Romans’ “5% better at everything” bonus

Again you keep acting like CD and HD aren’t already preserved.

Stop being this salty my guy, this isn’t the game from 1999, it’s a remaster/remake.

not the argument at all?

vikings are a well designed civ, that’s why they don’t need massive changes. I wasn’t even making the games preservation argument.

it’s bait-and-switch live service. not a remaster/remake.

I mean, isn’t new “Longship” a confirmation?

I think I must be missing something here: most eco bonuses don’t require effort to use them. Typically they will passively benefit you with no effort, and potentially benefit you more if you deliberately balance your economy around them. The Vikings’ bonus doesn’t seem to me to be a worse design than basically any other eco bonus.

There are a few that require active use to get the benefit, e.g. Poles’ folwark and Chinese extra villagers. But these “active use” eco bonuses are pretty rare, and to me they’re not obviously better designs than the passive ones. Also, I wouldn’t want all civs, or even a majority of civs, to have these types of bonuses.

What am I missing?
