What would you like to see in 2026?

A question:

In Age of Empires 2, the Spanish and Portuguese use the same basic architecture.

In Age of Empires 4, could the Portuguese use the same basic architecture as the Spanish? (noting that the “landmarks” and “wonders”, and perhaps even the castle, would be different between these two civilizations).

Castile, Navarre, and Portugal as civ variants with shared architecture set? Perhaps even Andalusia.

I like the idea of automating these things because in Age Of Mythology your units already use their abilities on their own.

Yes.

We can say that if Age of Empires 2 uses shared architectural sets for certain civilizations, the Age of Empires 4 could do the same.

It would be a way to guarantee and facilitate the development of civilizations.

I would really like to ensure the presence and development of certain civilizations in the game and not risk some of them never being created.

Yeah this is a must.
They must fix the game specially the crashes, the de-sync issues as well the performance problems like stutters and overall lag

Yes, basically it would be for modern reasons (selling the game in Spain and Latin America)…

In AoE 3 they also use Mediterranean architecture like in AoE 2, so in AoE 4 it should be the same…

A false statement of epic proportions!

There is no sense on having a civ just because of a language based audience. There is civ choosing.
Some people tend to choose civs cuz feel more comfortable playing with, some for its strenghts and mechanics, some just one or a few they are training on, some like me go full random choosing for fun.

If that were the case then Chinese people will only choose to play the Chinese Civ and nothing more.

Maybe just a variant off-the-course Architecture
Just like English and French

Yes, good point.

They could make subtle changes and other stronger changes.

Examples of subtle changes: different roofs, different details and ornaments on the structures.

Example of a strong change: completely new landmarks and wonders, and perhaps even a completely new castle and city center. They could create a unique look in one of the basic buildings (stable, archery range, or barracks), giving it a more unique appearance according to the chosen civilization.

I believe the Portuguese and Italians could benefit from shared architecture.

Now, I have no idea if they want to create a truly new architecture for the Spanish.

In any case, we hope to see the Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, and many more at some point, but as separate civilizations.

I’d love to see the Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, and Mapuches added.

By the way, if we assume they eventually add Spain, which Spain will they represent? The peninsular one or the one from the beginning of the colonial era?

Look, I’m Peruvian, and I come from a country where we were taught ad nauseam about the “Armies of the Spanish Conquistadors” during the conquest of the Inca Empire, both in school and university, but we weren’t taught about the Reconquista. After researching the “Reconquista” and the “Tercios” of Charles V myself, I can assure you that the colonial and peninsular armies were too different to fit into the same build.

Seeing how they’ve done the latest variant civilizations (more historically accurate), and knowing how much we like historical accuracy, perhaps they’ll make “Peninsular Spain” the era of the Reconquista plus the Imperial period of Charles V (Tercios).

The Conquistador era could very well be a “variant” of Spain. It fits very well as a variant, so they could use:

  • Landmarks of the Viceroyalty: Palace of the Conquistador, Viceroyal University, Cathedral of the New World
  • Native Friends: Caribs, Cañari, Tlaxcalans
  • Hero/General: called “Conquistador”
  • Unique Units: Conquistador, War Dog, Cuirassier, Roderic, Native Auxiliaries (Various), etc.

Furthermore, taking advantage of the topic title, here are some suggestions if you include Spain during its Peninsular period.

  • Mesta (Sheep): Due to the Islamic occupation, medieval Spain didn’t have much arable land, so they relied heavily on livestock and grazing in dangerous areas, even on the edge of enemy territory. They even created special “Roads” to protect their livestock, the “Cañadas Reales”. They only gained agricultural advantages when they conquered the south and acquired the “Haciendas”, which could be unique Imperial or Castle Age buildings.

  • Haciendas: Because “Haciendas”. From Castle or imperial Age, maybe unlocked by a mechanic.

  • Alcázares: What truly honors the name of Castile is the absurd number of castles or “Alcázares” built to protect the kingdom’s borders. They could be a cheap Keep, like the Templar Keep, with bonuses or some other mechanic. There’s a concept by FERNISgame that’s really cool in that regard.

  • Knights of the Order of Calatrava/Alcantara/Santiago: While heavy cavalry existed, composed not of nobles but of commoners (villainous cavalry, lesser nobles), most nobles in Spain preferred to fight within a religious order rather than with the rabble, which is why these orders had so many members. Within the orders, they learned not to look down on the common people, but to protect them, and also to kill Moors. You can easily choose one of the three, with a different bonus, as your heavy cavalry option.

  • Tercios: The tercios, the best of the Spanish Imperial Age. Once the peninsula was reconquered, it was time to conquer Europe. Armed with the combination of Pikemen, Swordsmen, and Arquebusiers, they were a nearly unbeatable force. Initially, instead of Arquebusiers, they had Crossbowmen.

  • Tercio Pikeman (Imperial Age).- However, if they are going to include Tercios, they must consider the Pikeman as a new infantry unit for the game. Something like a Spearman, but with an enormous range (1.5 or 2 tiles) and one that benefits from fighting in groups.
    – Interestingly, there are already bonuses in the game that work by accumulating units: “Atgeirmaðr” and “Chevalier Confrere”.

  • And please, Please: Don´t make the same mistake of Japanese, and invent a strange unit like a Handcannoner Tercio, would be a insult to the actual Tercios and Spain itself. Make a proper Arquebusier Tercio as the unique gunpowder infantry unit of Spain, or Castilla.

I would swap native allies for Landsknecht contracts, since those were units Spain used during the second founding of Buenos Aires and honestly, they fit better with the overall Spanish aesthetic. XD

Yes, it’s a good option…

Yes, the Incas and Aztecs are definitely coming sometime between this year and next (I think they’ll arrive this year along with the Vikings)… The Mayans and Mapuches are less likely, the Mayans because they disappeared around the year 1000 and the Mapuches because they came about very late (I don’t see them including a civilization between 1550 and 1700) but who knows…

Probably the Spain of the Reconquista (711-1492) (Asturias, Leon, Castile, Aragon, etc. etc.)…And then Al-Andalus as a Spanish variant with Berber units…

I would add the Missionary, the “Adelantado”, the Almogavar units, the Tercio and a few more…

Yes, you have many options… Native units (Mayan Holcan Spearman, Caribbean Blowgunner and obviously the new TLC UUs) or HRE units (Prelate, Landsknecht and Black Rider)…

Nice concept on a Spanish Civ for the game
Good ideas!

Hopefully something closer to yours and Chily’s would be released!

I would like to see

-Better customizable UI and readability for Xbox KBM and controller

-UI as identical to PC like Age of Mythology does which has a performance mode too. I can play AOM with Xbox KBM and do not feel a difference between pc and Xbox

A Mastery for each and every civilization and sub-civilization.

It will help everyone understand the game better.

Please developers I played the initial AOE1 in 97. I am also from Dallas.
I sure hope you consider listening to me on this one.

Yes, I would change the Jinete for the Genitour (basically the same unit) and put the War Dog in it and it would be fine…
