Yes, it’s an underrated game that had some very innovative ideas. If you’d released it in 2010 or 2015, right after SC2, it still would have felt very modern… Look how 3DE is more accepted today than the classic 3 was back in its day… Compare SC2, AoE 3 DE, and AoE 4 and tell me which of the three feels the most modern in terms of gameplay and graphics…
New patch notes out, not much other than bug fixes and a recurring event, but we do get some details on QOL coming soon:
Coming Up…
Alongside the two 2026 DLCs we announced in a previous blog post, the team has also been working on several quality of life features that we hope to release alongside the Spring DLC. These improvements include:
Random Map & Biome options, for those of you who want some surprise.
New Player Colors, for those of you who like to customize.
Faster flow for getting through the end-of-game screens, for those of you who can’t wait to get into the next match.
Map randomization and more player colors have been requested for a long time now. Not a bad start to the year!
I’m in shock! Hahaha
If we’re really going to get new colors when selecting the player’s civilizations, I’m really happy about that.
Thank you developers for listening to us!
Aside from the landmarks, I feel they’re going to have very noticeable differences from AoE3:
Aztecs
Chinampas: In AoE3, the chinampas weren’t given any visual recognition; the Aztecs had normal farms, essentially a copy of Native American farms. This should change in AoE4.
Temples: In AoE3, the Aztecs didn’t have temples. They had barracks designed like temples, but it wasn’t the same or the correct building. In AoE4, it’s expected that there will be several temple buildings. Perhaps, like Tuglaq, you could dedicate each temple or shrine to a different god, and grant a different bonus.
Human Sacrifices: Reduced to the XP bonus you get for killing units near the Tlatoani. In AoE4, your units will capture enemy units, taking them prisoner and leading them to the Templo Mayor for sacrifices… or at least that’s what happens in the AoM mod The Return of the Gods and Empires Apart, and AoE4 can’t be left behind.
Blood or Fervor as a 5th resource? XP?: Some kind of bar or resource to measure the advantage of sacrificing people. And obviously, to pay for Aztec blessings or festivals. I have an idea for this but wanted to save it for my 2.0 concept, although the only difference is that I would add more images. I would have the Aztecs be able to develop various Rituals as “A+ Passive Bonuses”. However, they can also perform “Mass Sacrifices” by paying blood to increase one of the passive bonuses to SSS+ for 3 minutes (+10% military unit production —> 500 Fervor: +50% military production for 3 minutess)
Military Units: While there are many models that can be obtained from AoE3, some can be improved, and others simply don’t exist. Since it’s a broad topic, I’m going to separate it from the list:
Eagle Warrior (Models)
– The Eagle Warrior didn’t turn out well, and it’s supposed to be the elite unit of this civilization:
This looks like anything but an Eagle warrior. The helmet shouldn’t match the civic colors; they could have used stripes or the colors of the shield, but not the helmet. Or at least, the entire outfit and helmet should have been a uniform color. He looks more like a Macaw warrior than an Eagle warrior.
On the other hand, neither the Otomitl Warrior nor the Cuachic Warrior, who were the elite of the Aztec warriors, are present. Instead, they invented a Skull Warrior, whose attire was theoretically that of the supreme general (Tlacochcalcatl).
Replace the Otomi slinger with the Matlazinca slinger, who were the best slingers of the Triple Alliance.
Warrior Priests
In times of war, Aztec priests would leave their robes and go to fight on campaign. There were several types, and they were given extra tunics each time they captured more soldiers in battle.
Of course, we need to see how the Aztecs turn out in Retold, and from there we could extrapolate them to AoE 4 (since it’s the same developers) by replacing the gods with landmarks…
Yes, for me they’ll be like Age of Empires 3, that way they don’t have to overthink it and can just focus on balancing in each game…Notice that the Japanese/Sengoku versions of Retold and 4 don’t vary too much from their AoE 3 version…
