It’s simply because it’s a condensed version. If you hover your cursor over the statistics, it will display a clearer box showing what it does.
You can also see what type of unit it is by hovering your cursor over the tile.

It really is. I miss how ornate the old UI’s were.
That’s fair. I’m not talking as someone feeling overwhelmed coming from II. I do not feel overwhelmed.
Its the same kind of engine, right?
Not that I said it was “so bad”, mind you. But I appreciate that people who come in here preferring III are going to, well, prefer III.
What about AoE IV-first fans?
KnowingLamb’s original criticism was included that relying on a hover effect was bad (and I agree - there should ideally be another way of triggering the extra info). I’m not sure citing a hover effect is the strongest argument, here.
Yes, but you know how people were complaining that the old UI took up half the screen…![]()
The players weren’t complaining about that. The complaint was that it was still there, even when nothing had been selected.
Getting back to the original topic, I really wish AoE4 had better mod support, especially for the UI. I’d love to take a stab at improving some of these things but it’s painfully restrictive.
Less Cheaters in game from China and get srlsy something done about this. If AOE5 will came over with them - i QUIT
This plus an large update for the Content Editor is very much needed
This is a MUST, hackers and cheaters should be gone!
A thing about Mongol is that, now that Mangudai has been nerfed, would that be cool if Keshik get some new buff with some charge damage against calvary, and some bonus against heavy perhaps after some upgrade that change their sword to mace?
Like in history they got this hook on the lance to tore enemy calvary off balance on their horses (yep they are actually already presented in the in-game documentary).
And use mace in melee combat to deal with heavy armored enemy units (these little mace seems already used by Batu Khan and his Torguuds though)
I think Mongol rn can really use some new stuff to spice their original calvary power, after all the new variant civs added. (And additionally, since Mangudai fire rate during movement get nerfed, could we possibly get their movement speed back to 1.62? As they are light calvary supposed to have high speed to specialize at harassment)
Another thing about Japanese is that, they never used hand cannons as standard battlefield weapon. They kind of just skipped to matchlock guns in their warfare after Portuguese traders arrived in Tanegashima in 1543. So their gun powder infantry unit should really be the Tanegashima Ashigaru like Sengoku Daimyo (another one called Ozutsu is more historically accurate though), instead of the hand cannon ashigaru.
But since they have already done a good job with Sengoku Daimyo (include that Tate shield), I suppose there can be some conflict on this change? Nevertheless, if the devs can consider perhaps just changing the gun model from hand cannons to matchlock guns, I think it will still improve experience a lot.
It’s a good idea, BUT, I think it won’t be possible the mace idea:
Torgut vs Keshik, the difference between them:
On the other hand, the Golden Horde variant is like the “Melee” version of the Mongols, while the vanilla version is the “Horse Archer” version.
That said, they could have another weapon besides the mace, like you say as the Hook, or even lassos.
Actually, I was going to suggest, given that Genghis Khan’s Mongols were known that even his heavy cavalry troops shoot arrows before the engagement:
My idea is similar that the Sengoku variant - Hojo clan technology - Tier 2: Samurai Bow, which allows samurai to fire arrows as a charged attack at regular intervals.
They might even give it something similar to the Keshik, maybe “Heavy cavalry bow”.
The Riddari has also a ability to throw axes temporarely, so it could works similarly.
Ill say it again. Spain as a civ
Must civs:Vikings,spanish,aztec,inca,venice,korea,some african civs(hausa maybe?)
Those are good Civs suggestions
I would like to add Vietnam as Dai Vet, and maybe another hero variant like Genghis Khan for Mongols, Scottish, and Khmer (with their proper Ballista Elephants)
Nice work indeed!
Definetly not its not a civ i hope they dont make that mistake.
Yes, that’s true…
Yes, those are good ideas…
Yes, those are definitely coming in the next years…we already know that Vikings are coming, arriving at the end of this year with a civilization whose identity we don’t yet know (probably Aztecs, since they’ll reuse the Aztec concepts from Retold for AoE 4 as well)…now, in April 2026, in theory, we should have the Chinese campaign with the three Rus/Malian/Ottoman variants we’re missing (Novgorod, Songhai, and Seljuks)…and next year, Spanish and Inca civilizations in a New World DLC in April 2027, and in another DLC in November 2027, Koreans or Khmers and Malays (maybe even a Dravidian variant for Delhi too)…
That seems like a solid plan
Why? There is Jean D’Arc
Because it was a heavily criticized variant, at least it will get a rework at some point (more UUs or a rework of the landmarks and UTs)…
