What'll happen to AOE1DE? Will they get free update or merge? Or just scammed?

It turns out this DLC is basically AOE1DE with AOE2DE features which was supposedly should’ve been the thing at first place. Basically forcing us to buying us AOE1DE AGAIN. Not to mention you still need AOE2DE just to play AOE1DE updates now. Feels very scummy practice and a backstab on AOE1DE players. It’d been much better going Romae Ad Bellum route instead re-selling the game for the THIRD TIME.

This DLC is an attempt to bring Vietnamese players but will it even work out? Vietnamese economy and PC is something to worry about. People on South Asia and South East Asia straight up pirates the game and got bad PC which still runs on decades old processors like Pentium. They just buy cheap laptop and call it a day. Gaming community there is more interested on Android games than PC.

With all that in mind you have now 15$ + 10$ game. But majority of playerbase of Vietnam is never gonna move away from old AOE1 if that’s the price model you got.

This DLC what original AOE1DE should’ve been like. There was like 2-3 updates for AOE1DE then was just abandoned despite the promises made.

So what’s the solution for this?

In future M$ should offer a merge or free update to AOE1DE players so that they will move to AOE2DE. Even a super cheap discount will work out despite how scummy practice it is.

Nothing for AOE1DE players

This is not a DLC for Age of Empires I Definitive Edition. It’s a new expansion for 2DE.
There is a discount of 15% for everyone, and I can see for people that own other DLCs, the discount for the bundle raises to -29% which is pretty nice for something not even released.

No, the original 1DE was supposed to be a recreation of a concept of the first game on a better, more modern engine. And that’s what it is. Making an ancient overhaul of the advanced design that ended in 2DE would be even a disservice in the eyes of some fans, not to mention purists. They’ve been threading a needle from the beginning and had to compromise to stay as faithful to the original design as much as possible.
What did they promise that wasn’t delivered?

Age of Empires 1DE is very dated but that’s the game. DEs are aiming to be something closer to remasters than remakes. What they announced here can’t be implemented in 1DE because that game is a very different thing, despite running on the same engine.

What is this DLC then? Why no update for AOE1DE for years? This is literally ctrl + c and ctrl + v of AOE1DE using the best advantage of AOE2DE. A group of community based modders can easily pull off something similar and there was a mod project for it. Look no need to be devil’s advocate. Just for minority of AOE1DE players, just give us free update of this DLC or a merge to AOE2DE. AOE1DE only buyers can enjoy AOE2DE improvements but not having access to AOE2DE itself. Simple as that.
They broke promises ever since release. They said were done with adding civs but we have now tons of DLCs today. They were gonna update AOE1DE and not gonna be abandoned but look what happened to it.

Should I rephrase the description from the store page?
They are recreating the Age of Empires content on Age of Empires II:DE framework, which substantially differs from AoE1 in many ways, that add up and result in the first installment being a much less approachable and enjoyable game (at least on a mechanical level), especially for newcomers.

Update of what? What part of the game is broken or needs updating? Game received a bunch of patches already, and that’s it. They promised 8-year support program or something?
It’s not a live service game, why they should update the game with 1K peak players, where their (and playerbase) main interest lies in keeping 2DE, 3DE and IV alive because they are places where they actually earn money and attract people.

No it’s not. You don’t have to work in game dev or be a MS insider to talk about it, but at the same time try to avoid saying ignorant things like that

Nobody is stopping modders from creating whatever they want.
Developers are free to do their take on ancient-themed expansion for 2DE. Nobody is forcing you to buy this, it would be highly advisable to restrain yourself from using terms like ‘backstab’ or ‘scummy’.

‘give me free, give me free’. You’re more than welcome to manage your money in any way you see fit. If you want to work for free or if you’re running a business and want your employees to do that- that’s ok.
Recreation of AoE civs on 2DE is not as simple as flipping a switch or releasing a 20mb patch. You have no idea what kind of work it takes so try to focus on what you know, and not manage othere’s people business.

Just because you bought 1DE it doesn’t mean you’re entitled to getting a free expansion for 2DE, even if you think it’s simple, fast and effortless and ‘everyone can do it’. Well, if it is- they can do it and you’ll be able to enjoy it for free, without a need to give MS one cent.

What promises they broke?

They’re not adding civs to 2DE. Rome DLC civs is clearly its own, separate set. Have you even seen the trailer?!

And they kept updating it for some time. They promised you post-launch support for how many years?

You clearly haven’t played AOE1DE. Pathing is broken. Game balance is awful to this day and was abandoned right after months after 2DE released. This update basically added Gates, Formation system and other already existing QOL features within AOE2DE itself and calling it new DLC and all of these should’ve been within AOE1DE at first place. If you can’t see that level of armed robbery then I dunno what it is.

Yeah sure good old “dont like it? don’t buy it argument” only to give room to dirty practices by corpos. I gave out several options. Either make it cheap or make it free for AOE1DE buyers the way they handled HD Edition. This is only for AOE1DE buyers. Im telling once again ONLY AOE1DE BUYERS. Even a cheap discount for AOE1DE is very reasonable compared to what they are doing right now. AOE1DE players deserved long awaited update. A good Barbarian or Indo-Aryan DLC. But nothing on that regard. Game was abandoned MONTHS after 2DE released. It was only a small bug fix patch.

Not talking about this DLC. Look go look up interviews post 2DE release in 2019. They said they will not add any new civs as DLC or other formats since Last Khan released. Then they just changed their mind.

However, Romans which is based around antiquities is gonna be added as a playable civ for AOE2DE players in this DLC.

I partially agree, but making it free would not make sense. They still added new things and for that I would pay a reasonable price, but indeed it is a re-use of pretty much all assets from AoEDE and as a owner of AoEDE I can’t justify purchasing essentially the same game at the current price of 15$ even with the quality of life improvements. If it comes down with a good discount for current AoEDE owners, say around 5-6$, count me in.

The DLC is not just AoE1 into AoE2. It also contains many QoL features. AoE II was always an upgrade from AoE I. WIth DE it got another upgrade with QoL features. Now everything from AoE II QoL features will be available for AoE1 now it became part of AoE2.

That being said, i can imagine feeling scammed as AoE1 player. You might have both the original, then DE and now you might have to buy AoE2 as well. But then look at AoE2: You have the original game, the HD game and then DE. People also bought the game 3 times.
