Doubt it is the devs’ choice. It’s such an obnoxiously bad feature no one asked for that presumably it was just mandated by Microsoft or whomever.
At least we’re past the times when it would even censor taunts or AI player names…

Please report issues with filtering where it’s removing normal/appropriate words. You can submit a ticket via support or report it as a bug on the forums. We do tweak the rules when it’s safe to do so.
We do not want any chat filter though. I say this on behalf of the entire Age of Empires community and their relatives, friends and neighbours.

Let us turn the chat censor off in settings. It’s not the devs job to protect us from ourselves.

Or make the content filter able to be disabled by some workaround which is not officially announced.
Such as a change of file or registry flag.
Because that way you don’t change the legal state of the content filter, and everyone who is annoyed by it can turn it off.
