Just one hour to release but I have still not managed to decide which civ to pick. I have refreshed my civ knowledge since beta by reading here:
Civ Overview
I am leaning towards English since I used those in beta but I suspect that they will be one of the weaker civs since the meta seems to be cavalry. It also seems that their economy bonus is weaker than other civs. Cheaper farms is good but typically you want to avoid farming until there are no more berries or things to hunt. Basically their economy bonus kicks in too late?

Though starting farms earlier than other civs is quite an advantage. They don’t get punished as much for switching to the farming era.
So far, based on watching far too many games on Twitch this week, France seems one of the strongest, basically because of age 2 knights and that they were just given all kinds of eco bonuses. Mongols, Rus, English all seem quite potent too. The map seems to have a pretty strong influence on which civ and strategy have an advantage. English seem one of the best to 2 TC boom if the map is one of the larger ones.

Yes, the maps can factor in greatly. And you can’t go wrong picking English early on. Better Tc’s and easy food eco from 5 mins. on. However, just like AoEIII, the French will rule all lol
Well I wouldn’t base it on which is strongest, just which you enjoy the mechanics of more. Balance is going to be getting tweaked anyway.
