Flemish Milita and Fire Lance look pretty similar and also function in a similar way. An Infantry unit with ok base stats and some bonus damage vs. Cavalry.
Of course Fire Lance do have their charged attack that makes them more unique but overall the units seem and look relatively similar.
So why don’t they both have the Shock Infantry armour class instead of the Flemish Milita getting the Spearman armour class.
I think giving them Spearman armour class made them too weak against Archers to ever be more useful then the Spearman Line that just does way more damage vs. Cavalry.

this one actually make me question the decision as well. Flemish militia by no mean is a cheap unit, yet they lose to militia line, not very good against cavalry like spear line and die to skirm while costing a wooping 30 gold, they are definitely not worth getting at all. The only good thing about them is that their upgrade through ages are completely free and instant.
My guess is that the stupid “button” still exists, that why they need to add spearman armor class so that when someone hit the “button” the other side still has a chance to counter with cheap skirm and not get overrun. The “button” is just ridiculous and people have been telling the dev to remove it from the game but for some reason they still think it’s a good idea to keep it, which is very out of touch.
I think they should just get rid of the button and remove the spearman armor class and give them a bit more bonus vs cav (maybe from 8 to 12).
My guess is that 120 Femish Militia cannot be stopped when they have Shock Infantry armor.
But yeah, the Barracks unit seems underwhelming as it is so hard countered by ranged soldiers.
Agree
Flemish Militia should be more infantry focus.
It is useless with Pikeman armor
I like the idea of give them Shock infantry armor instead
I don’t mind making militia-line more useful by countering every spear-holding UU, like ghulam and kamayuk as well.

You got it backwards. Giving them an additional armor class means they take bonus damage, not that they become stronger. That’s an opportunity to see less skirms and more champions.
Also why are Eagles and Jain Swordsmen shock infantry while Huskarls and Ghulams aren’t? Huskarls and Ghulams share the eagle’s trait of high pierce armor and fast speed, but they aren’t shock infantry. On top of that, they counter eagles while acting like eagles, which is bizarre.
And Fire Lancers are shock infantry while having almost nothing in common with Eagles (unlike Huskarls and Ghulams).
It’s obvious that the “shock infantry” armor class has no coherent definition currently. It’s just there to balance some units. They couldn’t slap shock infantry armor class to Huskarls and Ghulams either without rebalancing, otherwise these units will be ruined.

The important thing seems to be not requiring a Castle.
Huskarls can be trained in the barracks but require a UT which requires a Castle.
The other reason is probably not to touch a unit that is already balanced. There is still some legacy bonus damage from the time where Camels and Ships shared an armour class.
