Why is aom retold losing players so fast?

Gating DLC sales data from Achievements doesn’t really work well. Even in AoE2 the victory with DLC civ achievements have under 5%.

0.2% have a victory with Macedonians (Chronicles), Armenians and Georgians both have 3.2%. Not much. Earlier DLC were made free so the numbers don’t tell much anymore.

The most common Japanese achievement in AoM has 5.6% completion rate a way higher percentage, which is sill lower then completing the Chinese campaign with 6.8%.

But AoM was sold in a bundle with those two DLC while AoE2 has been out for a long time and many people probably just got it in a sale and might have never event installed it.

Yeah. Can confirm I own Macedonians, as well as Armenians and Georgians in AoE2, but never played any of them.

I confirm. I’ve never played for the Chinese or Japanese in AoMR.

Why did you buy the DLCs then?

Supporting the devs, keeping the option of playing them at some point open. Note that I have a lot of games that I cycle through and I’m not currently feeling like playing AoE2. I’ve got the disposable income to buy expansions (that I want) at release, so I do.

I also bought AoE 4 expansion played very little and regreted my purchase immediately but I didn’t want to stop supporting devs. Although I’m not buying the new exapnsion eventhough I know they still do need support. They just keep dissapointing with their variant civs. I was so hyped for delhi and mongol variant.

But their designs are just… meh….

Age of Mythology Retold feels worse with the new DLC. I’m new to the game, but the added Japanese and Chinese pantheons don’t feel like they belong, and I was never a fan of Atlanteans to begin with. Now most matches feel dominated by new units and mechanics that just aren’t fun to deal with.

God powers also feel unbalanced. Some are basically useless, while others can swing an entire match. People keep telling me “just rush Gaia,” but I don’t want to rush every game. I want to use myth units, yet my opponents can hersir-rush or cavalry-rush me in Classical Age, and Atlanteans can pump out hero cavalry whenever they want. I don’t have that same flexibility.

The Elo system is another major issue. I’ll get a streak of wins, then suddenly get matched against someone far above my level with the perfect map and god combo. It makes the whole experience feel inconsistent and frustrating instead of fun. Some games last too long and give barely any Elo, while others end quickly and cost a ton. I was aiming for 1200 Elo, but at this point I’m done. And while I was learning Ra, the monuments get buffed. I switch to Hades and learn his build order, and suddenly Ra gets changed again. It feels like a waste of time.

I’m honestly considering switching to AoE2, Warcraft 3, or stepping away from RTS games entirely. Adding new pantheons makes the original ones feel less unique. When every faction can field similar hero units, it takes away what made them distinct. The game can be fun, but certain god powers make it incredibly frustrating. I don’t understand why Atlanteans get three charges on some god powers either. I never liked them in the original because they’ve always felt like an overtuned, almost pay-to-win faction. Everyone plays Gaia and almost no one plays Oranos, and I’m tired of those matchups. I’m also tired of maps where my opponent gets resources I don’t. I’m not a fan of that at all.

I’m going against people with hundreds of games across many months and i just dont see much point to learning if I wasnt there at release .

A few multiplayer team games I DID ON ranked was constant susano blow across the map. And I just thought why play the game. I wsih my god powers were THAT annoying. Please for goodness sake buff restoration, IT IS TRASH.

I wish Hades had Bronze Armour too .. Earthquake isnt crazy either. H,ades god power is honestly so MEH. Sentinels is only good against early rush, rest of the game useless.

Interesting to see the pov from a new player.

I get the point of a gane that takes 10 min can give more/less than a game that took 60 because game duration has no impact on elo gained.

As to the New civ. Its gonna be very popular since its New and recently New at that. I get its your experience but at least hades sentinel is not just what you say. Its quite strong in his Building push.

Also resto is far from thrash, but i get the frustation and sentiment to loosing to something New and feeling what you have not that

Gaia is simply easy to play for people at you skill level but oranos is currently stronger. Its simply one of if not he highest skill level god for newer players to get into. Its a lot different from what he was on AoT.

In what maps your opponents get resources you dont? You mean the gold spawn locations? Or are you getting maps where you outright dont have something they do?

I’ve reinsdtalled this game to have more losses in a row. Frejyr uses a mythic god power to kill my entire army. Japan uses a god power to kill my entire army. Too many gods have access to this, and it makes me uninstall the game.

There was no skill they already gain FAR too much tempo. Norse can apply pressure throughout the entire game really well as their god powers help them for that. they DO NOT NEED a ONE SHOT GOD POWER. Dead game. Totally uninstalling. How can I go from 1050 elo, matched against 1200. Now fallen to 950??? What ius up with that

Gods totally imbalanced. Dead game. Fix hades and give him some god powers like building a free fort or summon a free wolf to kill your opponnet or sky passages up to a limit of 3 to help him out a bit because he doesnt really have that much utility that is always transferrable.

And or give him bronze.

It’s not fun playing this game. My last match up decided I will be uninstalling. I’m not coming back. god powers are totally imbalanc ed. Some are utterly garbage. SOme are utterly OP. Fix this. BUt you won’t which is why this game will always have a low player count. I’m glad to get rid of it for good. I’m never reinstallnig it like I did today.

I am not learning Ra again. Everytime they nerf and buff gods and you have to learn the playstyles again and I just lost my patience. 350 hours into this game I’ve had enough of how imbalanced some gods are.

People NON-STOP DEFEND Gaia, aND EVERYONE else. I refuse to play. Im done.

Last record update as of 2025

You want the game to be “fixed”but you wont come back ever again. Its kinda odd isnt it?

The match up yea its harsher when theres less players. Its not dead, but i guess if you compare it to big games it would seem like it.

As for the skill, theres things to do. Specially the Wolf one you are talking about. Its one of the more skileld based mythic god powers since you can dodge it or reduce the damage with good micro.

Seems you struggle with hades overall. Would you rather look into strategies for the god?

Theres players at 2 K that main hades so i assure you its not the god that keeps you from climbing the ladder. And if the god doesnt fit the playstyle you are looking for you can try out a different one.

You never really learned a god if a buff or nerf makes you incapable of using it to be honest with you.

Think what you want. Gave the game another go. Again elo system makes very little snese in this game. Some games you gain very little elo for what is a very time consuming game. And sometimes might win against a much higher elo player. But hardly gain any elo for it.

They dont want to fix it, that’s fine. I refuse to play. Done.

’never learnt a buff’ well if you’re going to be insulting. I think this game community is quite toxic and terrible. There’s a reason why other people play bigger games. Dead game. Terrible.

He wins a game, expected to win. Gains 38 points. If I won a game against a much higher rated player. I at most gain about 20 points. Elo system is clearly flawed and favours people who gets paired up in insimilar skill levels. Games shouldnt be massively skewered like this.

Hate to break it to you, but aom was never a competitive game. And it will never be.

Its not up to debate what you find fun or not, thats completely up to you and its understandable. I simply clarify somethings that are not true. You say hades is bad and cant win games. Thats objectively false, specially at your level. Theres plenty of tools to win with him.

Now if you find those tools or playstyle boring is completely fair, thats your taste. But then you also have other options to go for.

Its not insulting you. Its a cold truth. You can keep playing a god thats nerfed or buffed. Some things will work better than others, but to say you have to re learn a whole god because of a balance change means you didnt really grasp it initially.

Its easier to blame misses on externa things, but at the starting level you can win with anything. The only limiter is your skill.

Yeah there is so much unpredictability that made the game not suitable for top competitive gaming

I also wasn’t but they feel better in retold imo.

Ever god has accses to devastating powers. If every one has it then it is balanced.

In the rank that you are in balance doesn’t matter. Play what ever god you like. If you master your civ I guarntee you, You will win every match (In your elo range).

I disagree. What takes a game to be competitive? the game is balanced in a decent way especially in lower elos. The high level plays are just disrupted by the new DLC.

I would not say aom is not competitive (i mean theres tournaments of it) but the skill expresión is less than other RTS games due to its design, among those things, god powers.

Theres less to “react to” or “play around” when a god power can win the game in 2 clicks and theres barely counters for it. And its not just a matter of all civs having it or not. When you reach that top level gameplay very minor things become very apparent. Like some things completely shutting down others that are not really a thing anywhere else which is what tha competitive aspect begins to focus on.
