Why is everybody comparing AoE:DE to AoE2?

Ok maybe not everybody, but I see more than enough discussion about it.
( Gates were fun in AoE2. Will there be gates in AoE:DE ?
Or towers shooting multiple arrows like AoE2 castles )
C’mon! If you want to play AoE2 then play it!

Anybody here for AoE:DE because he/she loves AoE:RoR?

I’m barely older than AoE1. I grew up with it. It was the first game i’ve ever played with. I want AoE:RoR feeling and not AoE2.

I agree, I don’t see the need to add things from AoE2 into the game-play such as garrisoning and gates. It would simply play like a re-skin of AoE2. Allow the strategies and mechanics of AoE1 to shine.

Both Age of Empires II: HD Edition and Age of Empires: Definitive Edition are remastered Age of Empires games which use the Genie game engine.

maybe its because aoe 2 is hailed as the best aoe so far?

But the gameplay and the feeling of AoE:RoR and AoE2 is different. Not completely but it is different.
If you pack the core game with AoE2 features then you get another AoE2 HD version. It makes no sense.

They still can play AoE2 if they think it is the best. It’s like making an apple tree grow a yellow bended less juicy apple 'cuz banana is the best.

yes yes no reason to take over good mechanics from good game i guess you dont even want unit ques

I totally agree. AOE-ROR is very different in play-style: it is way more micro management than AOE II is. And that is what I really like about AOE-ROR, is that one unit can make a huge difference.

It is also like comparing Red-Alert 2 to a game like Company of heroes. Where I prefer the latter. You have to think about your population cap. And the units you build have to be controlled wisely, instead using tactics of mass-production.

I guess you’re right :#

@Zsombro Same here, im only born in '94 but this was my first PC game. (I live in Canada, hockey first) If i want to play AOE 2 i can and will on Steam. But I want AOE 1, so here i am, on the forum for my dream.~

Yeah, Age 2 was by far the best Age game Ive ever played of the series, Age 3 was good but didnt feel like an “age of empires” game. Love being apart of the beta and forums. First time. Thanks for havin me lol off topic.

While I agree that Age 1 and Age 2 are great games, the differences between the two provide for some unique game play. The lack of a complete walled in base in Age 1 makes for the use of different tactics that sets it apart from Age 2. I hope that the pathfinding and other issues in Age 1 are corrected and the game is just re-skinned with better graphics and the true Age 1 gameplay remains the same, jut my .02 cents.

I wish they would make it more like AoE 3.

No, seriously, a simple re-skin wouldn’t suffice for a game that old. At the least, pathfinding/AI and UI should be improved. Better/more unit animations would be great, too.

I personally would appreciate more of a remake, with empires more distinct from eachother (eg. more unique units), but that’s probably not in the scope of a “definitive edition”.
The reason why I’m (and probably why other people are) hoping for additional features is because there has not been an “Age of” game in a very long time and there’s certainly a demand for it…

Yeah, honestly i see no reason for them not to add more things. a simple re-skin isnt the only thing needed. more features would be great idea.

Ok. I understand that you like the best features in every ‘Age of’ games. The solution is another game after the definitive edition. It would be the ‘Age of Empires: Hope for the best’ and it could be something like a test environment to see if all those features work well together, but I know that there cannot be a best solution what is good for everyone.

Agreed. I’m confident changing too much of the game would break the experience. Staying true to the original is a must. When introducing lots of new things they should start developing a new game and not try to change something what was good back in the days.

I most certainly agree with this, however I am all for the few improvements which have become standards in the rts game genre, and I believe there are some good views of ways age 1 can be improved by looking at some mechanics that worked in age 2 but just didn’t exist yet and so could not have been thought of when age 1 was being developed.

I for one, also having grown up playing age 1 for years, would like it to have a little less micro required for every single thing  That said I love the original game and the focus should not shift too far from that original vision

@SammyyyyyyyyZA this is perfectly describing how I feel about it!

Why compare AoE:DE to AoE2? For me it is simple. Never liked the Middle Ages as a setting, but have to admit that gameplay-wise, the sequel is way better. It’ll perhaps be a blasphemy for some of you, but what I want is a game that plays like AoE2, but has the AoE1 setting. When dreamed of a remake, I always thought like that - cause modern resolution support and minor rebalance is already available with upatch.

Don’t get me wrong, I love playing AoE1 but I know how much of that love comes from the massive nostalgia factor.

AOK was a lot of people’s first game in the series, so whilst I don’t dispute its popularity some of its continuing popularity must be attributable to this, I suspect lots of the AOK community never played AOE. Its also clear than many AOE players never bought ROR which had queues for unit production, 200 pop, Gigantic map size etc.

When I built my first pc for ROR Ram cost me £150 for 128mbs by the time AOK came out I suspect the pc gaming Base was greater due to falling costs Moores Law etc

ROR was my first entry in the series and then three years later i played aok. I was just amazed by the new mechanics and by the improvements on the gameplay and i still loved the game. However i was disappointed by the overall “feel” of the game: i did not like the soundtrack, the time period was not my favourite and there were a LOT of bugs.

I agree that introducing all of the features of the second one on the DE would ruin the experience, but i think that a better balance of the civs, rally points, more techs and different unit queques are necessary to bring new life to the game. A simple reskin is pleasant, but not enough for my taste.
