Why no Mameluke event for the Louvre tie up devs?

There’s this great tie up with the Louvre ongoing focussed on the Mamelukes. Why isn’t there a special event for this in AOE2DE like in the past? Could the devs introduce a reskin of the AOE2DE Mameluke for this event - a more historically accurate version of the inaccurate camel unit for the event, besides Adam Isgreen just lamenting how it was an inaccuracy?

I hope we go into the true nature of the genuine strategic value of cutlass throwing camelry

The developers are busy trying to find a way to bring even more mythical powers into the game; they don’t have time for these silly distractions

They are planning an Ain Jalut event for that.

Because the leadership at EW is moronic.

Main armor class is camel. This is distinct from the cavalry armor class (which Mamelukes used to have as well, before it was converted to the unique Mameluke armor class) in that it takes less bonus damage. Shouldn’t confuse players by making them ride a horse, but not take damage as a horse unit, unless being confusing and non-standard is specifically the intention.

It would also confuse players as to the effect of the Saracen civ bonus, “Camel units +25% hit points”.

Its an event specific mod only. To commemorate the occasion. They have added AOE3 design units to AOE2DE before.

This is very easy to fix as they are a UU. Just change the wording.

I agree and was going to suggest replacing the Bactrian camel with a dromedary… but then I watched this video:

and literally the first thing a historian says in it is “the Mamluks didn’t use dromedaries”!

I do agree that it’s weird that there’s no in-game event for this (in fact, nothing official in game at all). An event skin could replace the camel with a horse, but what would you do about the scimitar? Throwing sabres or lances isn’t exactly much more historical.

In the video they say the mameluke’s armour and clothing is pretty accurate. I guess the AoE3 ones look different because they’re from a later period.

Free cosmetics??

Nonsense have your micro transaction profile pics and fantasy 3k expac. China money is more important to us than being celebrated on the world stage for fostering an interest in history

The Bactrian camel can be “justified” if we consider it a nod to the Central Asian Turkic origins of the Mamluks. But as for the scimitars, there really isn’t much we can do about it lol

They can just replace the camel with a grey or white arabian horse.
There are no grey horses for UU if I remember correctly.

Exactly, replace the camel with a horse. Just make a new editor unit =- armoured cavalry man armed with scimitar with anti knight bonuses- same attire for the rider. Introduced via a patch. Easy.

The Mameluk is iconic. Leave it alone!

Yes, I guess they chose it either because of that, or to visually distinguish the unit from camels and heavy camels – quite likely a combination of the two.

The Kipchak’s horse is grey

I’m not sure why we’re surprised that the same guys that gave us xianwei and khitanguts didn’t do anything about mamelukes. They probably found a obscure manual after a couple second of navel gazing and are convinced it’s fine.

Make the unit a cavalry archer?

“Research and design exploration quickly showed that the Mamluk Dynasty was extremely advanced for its time. With this in mind, we committed ourselves to the goal of making Mamelukes ride Bactrian camels and throw scimitars.” That seems like the kind of non-sequitur reasoning Forgotten Empires would apply, right?

(Disclaimer: I agree with the decision to keep the nonsense Mamelukes in DE. My argument is: it was harder for non-specialists to find historical information in the late '90s, something something iconic, something something nostalgia.)

Could do, but since it deals melee damage that introduces an extra game-logic problem. For the visuals to match the behaviour in-game, it has to ride a camel and use a melee weapon.
