After the 3K’s issues, maybe it’s time for the community to sever ties with them, reverting all the last three years’ questionable decisions via modding and making that the de facto official version.

There are already games whose unofficial versions are more popular, better, and much more valued than the official ones. So what prevents AoE2DE from being one of them?

This legacy cannot be left at the mercy of people who prioritize money over protecting the core values of the game. I don’t think anyone who thinks it’s okay to introduce ancient civs or heroes to the base game values the legacy of the game at all. And if you somehow convince them that it was a wrong decision, they’ll come up with another out-of-place feature sooner or later.

Three years is more than enough time to evaluate whether someone is up to the task or not.

because people who care about the historical accuracy and immersion arent usually the ones who mods and makes their own version of the game. Generally that would only really happen if the game was abandoned with terrible pathing or just abandoned.
