There has been a recent announcement by Xbox, undertaking an ongoing reorganization. It appears that Activision will now supervise World’s Edge, that it to say Age of Empires license. In my opinion, it might not be a great news. For instance, in term of pricing, the recent Warcraft 3 reforged expansion, Forsaken Kingdom, is sold for 30$. Are we going to get Age of Warcraft? Is Blizzard even part of Activision within Xbox or are they separate? Maybe more like Age of Duty then. Jokes aside, it’s really hard to predict what if anything will change though that. Xbox was never particularly good at managing the franchise but not that Activision has done anything noteworthy besides Call of Duty in the past 15+ years. ---

Activision actually published Empires Dawn of the Modern World which was made by Stainless Steel Studios, a studio formed by former AoE1 developers that also made Empire Earth 1 (not 2 and 3). But that was over 20 years ago. Ironically a few days before Call of Duty 1. Still interesting that they published an RTS before. ---

Activision also owned Creative Assembly up until _Rome: Total War_, but that was ages ago. ---

There is a really grim dark age upon the games, Activision pretty much over killed Blizzards ability to make games, any good idea was simply bullied to be canceled. ---

lets not pretend blizzard were saints either, but obviously with activision best advice is extreme caution on our end and rejecting any BS that could negatively impact the age games ---

Activision gradually eroded Blizzard’s independence and creative autonomy through relentless financial pressure, cost-cutting, and corporate interference, which ultimately led to Blizzard founder Mike Morhaime’s departure in 2018. Under pressure from Kotick, Morhaime was pushed to hire a corporate Chief Financial Officer (Armin Zerza) from outside the gaming industry. This introduced aggressive cost-cutting measures, reduced development timelines, and shifted company priorities away from Blizzard’s traditional “when it’s done” philosophy toward satisfying unrealistic quarterly shareholder expectations. Activision pushed for aggressive monetization of intellectual property to a point where they no longer did make actual games. From my point of view, they brought a golden goose to the butcher. The entire buy of Activision was a mistake; not only did they waste a lot of money, but also got a company that lost even the basic understanding of what games are and doesn’t contribute to game development.
