Yes, Cavalry in many cases didn’t use swords. Swords are very unpractical on horseback. Most commonly they used lances or horsemen picks/axes. Types of weapons that had some reach and penetration. Ideally some which would not harm the bearer by sitcking in the hit enemy.

Nop.

That’s a justing knight. Not all mounted troops used lances, the sword was still the main weapon, the lance was more there for the charge, and some groups relied more on lances than other, sword is better as a generic style.

Also another detail, knight with those type of lances were not using those types of helmet, as in it’s not the right timestamp.
Cavalier helmet design is the Crusader Great Helm, and the Lancer knights were more widely used after the crusades in europe. One of the reason may eventually be the fact that there is less trees in the middle-east than in europe available to make single-usage-breaking weapon so relying on sword was more legit.

I prefer to remain unchanged.

The appearance and weapons the unit carrying affects the unit recognition imo. It may be a bit hard to distinguish between steppe lancers and cavalier at the first glance. This may affect micro.

In close quarter fight after charging, swords were commonly used if I remember correctly. Medieval lance broke pretty often after charging.

Sword was not the main weapon of a european mounted knight.. I don’t care for a skin change, I don’t mind they use swords as they did since the AoK… but their main weapon was lances and their main role was shock cavalry and heavy cav didn’t use swords as primary units until the times of muskets

Main weapon of European Heavy Knight is the European War Horse. The lance was there only for the first impact, and then you take your long sword, or your mace to deal with people while protecting yourself with your shield.

Why was the sword their main tool ? Because once dismounted, you can survive with a sword, what you could not do if the lance was really your “main” weapon.

The period you’re thinking about is the late middle-age, juste before the musket era, when the pikes started to be more present on the battlefield, so knight had to carry long range weapon too. But it’s also tied to the region of the cavalry group. French cavalry had units called “the lance” which first was light troops using some regular spears, definitly not the jousting lance you depicted, that were later changed toward other weapons up to the “Gendarme” (men-at-arm).

As for the “Cavalier”, al is in the name “Cavalier” stands for Cavalry, meaning Horse at first. The horse was as of a weapon as the roman hopplom was part of their kit to be a legionnary.

Paladins would match the big lance way more than Cavalier, for many reason, including the fac that Paladin represents high-middle-age troops, at a time where european powers regained their wealth after the crusades. The crusaded started just after the Viking Era when Europe was just raided over and over again, with the Crusade period, they became rich again and then the High-Medieval era came to be the era we’re depicting in many movies, with knight jousting with colorful coat of arms. There is even a unit in the game called “frankish paladin” if you’re curious about it. AoE4 got one dlc where you got some pretty interesting knights using combat spears for the charge impact, and then they turn to their main weapon, the swords to fight.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the knight line is meant to be a “generic unit style”, and as mentionned the mounted spear combat style was not a global used tactic but more a specific doctrina. That’s why Unique Units exist, such as the Leitis, Coustillier (Lance from the french Company d’Ordonnance), etc.

However if we want to give the cavalier a more legit weapon than the sword, then it’s definitly the Mace. For the timeframe the unit represent, which is basically the 2nd and 3rd crusade, European Knights used a lot maces to crush ennemy with combination of blunt trauma attacks and the horse momentum to damage ennemy heads by just swinging their mace or flail while moving. But I’d prefer to have mace rider as a unique unit, for austrian habsburg heavy knights for example.

Cavalry swords are an old thing, the Roman Spatha was a cavalry variant of the infantry Gladius, some medieval swords were longer bladed specially to be more effective on horse than dismounted, but once again, the main weapon of a Knight is the Horse itself.

I think the unit where sword doesn’t fit most is actually the Camel Rider – from what I’ve heard, camels are too large for the rider to reach anything with a sword, they used lances.

IMHO, the Knight unit line should be reworked into Knights (Western Europe, swords/maces [probably with slow cooldown lance charge ability, which also should require absenсe of close units forward]) and universal cavalry local types (such as Furusiya (Muslim states), Heavy Steppe cavalry, Boyar cavalry, Cataphracts/Proniars etc.)
My early note about universal cavalry concept: [If every civilization had two UU what unit of civilization would you like to see? - #56 by alexandr.catalaun](https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/if-every-civilization-had-two-uu-what-unit-of-civilization-would-you-like-to-see/282027/56)

This may be pretty subjective. But aoe requires a lot of attention. I just don’t want to look into detail while in fierce fight. I prefer to command at the first glance.

Most accurate unit would be the chronicles BE/sannaya unit with its really long pole weapons.
