For Mongols, Cumans, and Huns (any true nomadic civ missing) get Yurts instead of houses. Yurts are created with 20 wood instead of the 30 for houses and take up less space. There is already a Yurt texture in pastures that could be scaled up a little. Remove Huns bonus of no houses for half-priced Yurts (10 wood each).
Giving them a nomadic architecture (or even 2, western steppe for Huns and Cumans and eastern steppe for Mongols and Khitans) with yurts as houses would be a good stop-gap, without affecting the balance at all.
But if you make them cheaper, they should also be weaker, notably being less useful for improvised early defence. A tent, even made sturdy for the harsh steppe winters, isn’t as solid as a house made of stone and wood.
I would argue that no houses for Huns is perhaps the most iconic civ bonus in the game, loved by new players around the world, yet I don’t think I’ve ever really heard it being called problematic or OP. So for me that part of the suggestion is a hard “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
As for balance, making it a bonus for the Mongols which already are a strong civ : some wood saving surely wouldn’t hurt a fast castle strategy to use that wood on more horse archers or mangudais, or getting farms faster for a scout rush in feudal…
My bad, I googled it as I couldn’t see in the game when I posted that! So maybe yurts are like 15 wood then, and the Huns new civ bonus is 10 wood yurts?
Updates based on suggestions:
Yurts have -50% HP then houses (get slightly stronger by age still) but limits use as defensive structure
Huns get Yurts at -33% cheaper (could also have +5 capacity to pay homage to old bonus?)
Khitans get Yurts
New Savings cost update based on 25w assuming 5 TC’s:
Houses 25w x 35 = 875w tot
Generic Yurts 15w x 35 = 525w tot
Hun Yurts 10w x 35 = 350w tot + hold +5 more pop cap ea.
Totally understand if it ain’t broke don’t fix it but for immersion, QOL updates, a small balance update, and just for fun! Feels like a compromise to be friendly to new players still but also encourages good game habits
Houses have 550 hp in dark age, 750 in feudal and 900 in castle & imperial. So you can keep the 50% hp level per age, this will still translate into auto upgraded. They also start with negative armour but it gets increased so it can also be fine-tuned.
Maybe make it 60% or 80% of the hp but with -2 armour compared to the house ?
I like that idea, testing would have to be done to see what would be ideal but I like the new HP and armor changes. Any other thoughts or changes? Would this be a realistic thing the devs COULD do?
The Hun bonus is good because you dont have to deal with building houses at all. Nerfing Huns makes no sense considering they’ve been powercrept for so many years, they’re not even top 15 castle age civs on open maps now
Secretly, the purpose is to justify adding steppe lancers to their unit pool. But also again, you’d not have to worry about houses as much with the pop space bonus. Just seems odd to not have to build houses at all, but respect your POV
I don’t think they’re necessarily keeping away Steppe Lancers from Huns for balance purposes, the version of Steppe Lancers in-game are anachronistic to the period of Huns
Adding SL line and adding yurts for houses has what in common?if you are planning to add SL line it can be balanced out by removing something else righ?
True, that’s a good point. Kinda undersold myself but I really do like the aspect of adding the yurt. Seems like a fun immersive add for the game. My comment mostly meant that in addition to the change, maybe this could justify a version of steppe lancer for Huns, but other balance changes could be needed!
