A benefit to having played RTS since SC1 is having experienced a time where cheating in this genre was scarce. Oh man, those were good times. And the RTS genre is good for the mind - when its not compromised by cheating (in which case is unhealthy)
Theory #1
The method used for maphacking remains unchanged since starcraft. After having grown into a professional corperateer, i’ve come to realize there are few people who understand things.
By that i mean, there’s a very real possibility that, the entire map system of every AAA RTS with fog of war and similiarties to starcraft HAVE ALL been developed using the same method as starcraft - And hell, the same team/person too! In that sense, the method of cheating passed on from game to game could be an inside money making scheme - paid to specific people for the information required to maphack after each update, which is then sold to everyday folk through middlemen.
The whole market of cheating in this genre is just too incredibly streamlined for this not to be a real possibility at this point.- and would explain why only the map itself is hacked, and nothing else (and why they cant fix it)
Theory #2
Its possible the entire pushback against cheating has been a facade from the get-go. Blizzard back in the day had herolded this so called “Warden” anti-cheat which never, to this day, has banned anyone from an RTS game. Although the insiders over at blizzard would say otherwise, i, personally, have never heard a single ban reported in any channel.
Its the oldest trick in the book, fearmongering. “Hey, we figured out how to stop you! Better stop doing it!” (sabre rattling) when in reality, they never even knew where to start fixing this problem to begin with.
Conclusion:
Either way, what im trying to say is, stop fprotesting it. There is no horse more dead than this one, its been kicked so hard for so long, there’s not much horse left to kick and you’re fooling yourself at that point.
Some real world heart-to-heart advise is to either find a way to play with folks of integrity, or, if you must play with randoms, either accept the disadvantage, or join them. Everyone at the top of the ladder is cheating right now with the exception of certain gods who are just wired different than the rest of us.
