A more Tudor/Early Modern Period skin for the archer

Hi all,

now, a new topic for the reskin community

As already stated in the hospitaller-topic, a more time-appropriate skin for the English Archers would be very suitable for the timeframe

Sealing has already posted a first version, although not in the mod list.

It’s baded on a picture SirBarnzy1 posted:

Only thing I would maybe change, is to give them a white coat like Sealing has given them a red one now, place a cross in the middle (in the player’s colours), and have the cuffs (the front part of the arms) also in the player’s colours), like in that picture:

Nevertheless, I am sure that Sealing will be cooking up something fine

Is this the English archer’s skin before his first upgrade? It’s not bad, but it reminds me of an Eastern European archer (it’s because of the hat I guess). Also, his bow must be different, since it’s not “long,” and its retracted appearance at the ends needs to be changed (the English archer should have the longest bow in the game). As for the cross, it might look a bit cheap, but if that’s the historical look, I have no problem with it.

Hi Desert,

yes, this will be (hopefully very soon) the English’s reskin

About that hat - that is a basical Tudor hat, which at the time (abt. 1550) would be worn by military and civil alike.

About the Bow, that one could really be changed - although I do not know if the game has a unit that uses the “real” english Longbow

about the cross - it looks cheap, bc. it was cheap back than, this was litterally spare pieces of cloth they would have sown upon their coats to distinguish themselves from other archers and in between their units.

Thank you for your clarification. However, the hat’s appearance could be slightly modified to resemble the hat in the photo above more than a Russian chapka (removing the white lining should be enough to eliminate the fur illusion). The bow is, in my opinion, crucial to this redesign.
But given the skins already created by this person, I am confident in the success of this reskin.

Aaah, now I get what you mean - it looks like the hat was brimmed with white fur!

That should not be too hard for Sealing, given the fact that he made the whole upper body part in no time! Abt. the bow, maybe you can find the archer unit that uses the yew-longbow of the english and give Sealing the name, so he can get the bow from that model!

Now is really a longbow

Portrait update would be nice too

That’s the Japanese one  I think DesertPage is more talking about the overall shape (the yew longbow has no protruding tips like the asian bows, but an overall smooth arc, like the picture below) that reminds him of an easter europea bow with “Siyahs”.

That’s the english one:

And that is the eastern european/central asiatic one he refers to:

I do, however, not know if there are any game assets in the game that corrispond with the english longbow
the best version that I know would be the bow from the aztec arrow knights, maybe you can recolour the tips to be dark brown (historically, they were made of cow horns so that they were more durable)

If you got any questions about a historical skin for units, feel free to contact me!

It can be the bow from the jungle bowman, a bit more longer with an other color

EDIT: I forgot to say it is ready: Mods Single - Age of Empires - World's Edge Studio

The size of the bow is perfect. The color of the hat too. I would change the color of the bow to be completely beige if possible. Good work

I tried the mod and I must say, thanks to your mod I discovered the British, because what was preventing me from playing as them was precisely the inaccurate skin of the English archers. The skin and portrait are very good. But I would make the bow a uniform color, I mean remove the brown bands.

Will you ever make skins for each upgrade (except Imperial)?

Thank you!

British are a great civ. I like the Redcoats, the granted Harquebusiers, the Rockets

That’s why I want we can have Longbows and Rangers together. They are very different units, it should be possible combining them, as in one mod I did. I don’t want lose them. But Rangers are a very effective unit.

Probably for the next update of the mod. To do it is easy.

It depends. If I find good inspiration images and I can do them on the game, very probably.

Yes, now it looks much better. The normal version looks like it’s from the Lancasterian period (1399-1485), but this version looks like it’s from the Tudor period (1485-1603)

Yes, they are a classic civ for learning to play

True, but isn’t that a bit redundant?.. I’d prefer if you could use the Longbowman with the Tudor/Stuart skin until the Fortress Age (which would be 1620-1720), then it’s locked and the Ranger is enabled, and from there until the Imperial Age you use the Ranger

Fantastic work @SealingEar046 - I appreciate the time and effort you put into these.

If you ever work on Fortress/Imp skins for them, they could be very interesting - they (in very few numbers) were still around in the English Civil War (mid 1600s) within the odd country militia/trained band or sometimes during siege defences. The uniform would have just been the typical militia clothing (so very varied) - flat-brimmed hat, breeches, buff coat, etc (tan/grey colour).

I think they are not exactly redundant. Germans have the Landwehr, the Needle Gunner, the Jaeger and could have the Mountain Soldier. Dutch have the Aknkobia, the Blue Guard and the Highlander, and they were soupposed to not having any musketeer
I see no trouble for having both units at the same time, just for not losing an unique unit. You, the player, could decide simply not creating the Longbowman if you don’t want to. I, as an example, do not use the Captured Mortar (is that its name?) when I am Aztec.

Thank you!

Imperial units would have a less decorated uniform? It would not look good

Very nice idea

A clever approach for a reworked British in the game
Good work!

Yes, that’s true
it’s just that it used to be very common to see the Longbowman in the Industrial Age, and now with the Ranger it doesn’t look so out of place
