I know that the trees are plentifull, as of right now but some of the new maps dont have as much in order to have space for the new points of interest. So I was thinking what if we had a way to plant trees in age 3. It might me a research ability that villagers gain and you can plant a tree by spending 20 food. Once you plant it you need to wait 10 minutes to grow into harvestable tree. It would offer a new way into resource management. What do you guys think???
I mean, it was absolutely a thing for managed forests in the medieval period, so this wouldn’t be out of place. You could even have a ‘Forester’s Hut’, which when built would slowly generate a new forest around (like some kind of wood farm). The question is, do we need it?
In some team battle maps with scarce trees (for example: grassland), this functional building may be needed. There are so few trees on this map that it is difficult to produce enough spearmen to counter the knights. Perhaps a new building could be designed that combines the functions of an arrow tower and a tree-planting structure, and trees could be invested in as a strategic resource.
This, I believe, would change the core identity of an Age of Empires game and make it more like a Settlers game, which it is not. I don’t think it should be added.
Both are great games, but vastly different; let’s keep it that way.
I think spawning new trees could be something specific to a new civ. Perhaps around a landmark or other building..
I played settlers 2 and 3 a lot, back in the day and it is totally different. It is not even close. In settlers the tempo is so slow you can go make yourself a meal and come back and hopefully the settlers would have finished the tasks so you can give them new ones. What Im suggesting for aoe4 is give a command the villager goes out plants trees and after a short time probabbly the time it takes to age up you have a forest you can chop down. In settlers during that time the forester will plant 3 trees at best. Totally different dynamic.
Age of Empires games are supposed to end at some point.
This is done with resources depletion
Yeah, I get what you’re saying, and I can see how that would be useful in really long matches. But I still feel like it doesn’t really fit with how Age of Empires is designed.
One of the core parts of AoE is dealing with limited resources and making smart choices when stuff starts running out. If you could just plant trees and create your own forest, it kind of removes that challenge. It would make things like map control or raiding woodlines less important, which are big parts of the game’s strategy.
It’s a cool idea in theory and makes sense in games like The Settlers or even Anno, but AoE has always been about tempo and adapting—not really about sustainability or building up over time. I think something like this might change the feel of the game more than expected.
Still, it’s a fun concept to think about just not sure it fits in AoE4’s world.
Yea I see what you mean, have you checked beasty vs puppupaw with HRE vs lancaster??? He mined all the map had better army and still lost because he could not destroy the eco that manors were producing. 110 vils vs 40 and still better eco with 40 ??? That civ needs massive nerfing.
