I’m writing to share some significant concerns regarding features (or lack thereof) that currently seem to
contribute to a challenging environment concerning player toxicity, particularly in 1v1 matches.
- The Absence of a Dedicated Mute Option for All-Chat in 1v1 Games:
Currently, players in 1v1 matches cannot selectively mute the All-Chat function. While team
communication is vital in team games, the utility of mandatory All-Chat in a 1v1 setting is
questionable and often seems outweighed by its potential for negative interactions. In many
competitive games, the All-Chat channel in 1v1 is frequently used for:
Attempting to distract or tilt opponents during gameplay.
Expressing frustration or insults when a player feels they are losing.
Post-game taunting (e.g., “gg ez,” insults, etc.) before the player can leave the match
screen.
Forcing players to be exposed to this without an opt-out significantly detracts from the
focus on gameplay and sportsmanship. Providing a simple option to disable/mute All-Chat
specifically for 1v1 would empower players to curate their own experience and avoid
unwanted negativity.
2**. Concerns Regarding the Effectiveness of the Player Reporting System:**
There’s a widespread perception within the community that the current system for reporting toxic behaviour (like abusive chat, post-game harassment, excessive taunting) lacks visible impact.
Players frequently encounter individuals who engage in clear violations of sportsmanship
or chat conduct rules, especially in the post-game lobby.
Reports are submitted through the available tools.
However, there appears to be little to no feedback or discernible consequence for the
reported individuals. They often seem to continue playing and repeating the behaviour
without interruption. This lack of perceived consequence can be demoralizing for those who report and may inadvertently embolden those who engage in toxic behaviour, as they feel there are no repercussions.
Further Considerations:
Post-Game Lobby Vulnerability: Even if All-Chat were mutable during the game, the post-
game lobby remains a prime spot for unsportsmanlike conduct, and reports related to this periodseem equally ineffective.
Prioritization of Community Health Features: While new content and balance updates are
essential and appreciated, fundamental community health tools like robust muting options and an effective, transparent reporting system are equally crucial for the long-term enjoyment and retention of players.
In Conclusion:
My hope is that the development team will consider these points seriously. Implementing a 1v1 All-Chatmute option and improving the transparency and effectiveness of the player reporting system would be significant steps towards fostering a more positive and welcoming environment in Age of Empires 4. These changes would allow players to better focus on the strategic depth and fun the game offers, ratherthan dealing with unnecessary toxicity.
Thank you for considering this feedback.
