When Age of Mythology: Retold was announced, fans were excited to see the return of a beloved classic with modern updates. Among the many promises made by the developers, one in particular stood out: the inclusion of the Chinese civilization at no additional cost for those who purchased the most expensive edition of the game. However, with the recent release of the Immortal Pillars DLC, that promise seems to have been broken.
The expansion, which introduces the Chinese civilization along with 12 new gods, a 9-level campaign, and mythical units, is now being sold separately. This move has left many players frustrated and feeling deceived. If the developers initially promised the inclusion of this content for premium edition buyers, why is it now locked behind an additional paywall?
This situation raises several concerns:
Was the original promise misleading or intentionally vague?
Did the developers change their stance after seeing potential profits from selling the Chinese civilization as separate DLC?
Will this set a precedent for future expansions and monetization practices in Age of Mythology: Retold?
Many players are now voicing their disappointment on forums and social media, calling this a bait-and-switch tactic. Others argue that while additional content is welcome, it should not come at the expense of breaking previous commitments to the community.
What do you think? Were you expecting to receive the Chinese civilization for free as promised? Will this affect your trust in the developers and your willingness to support future expansions?
Without access to official statements and provided sources I’m thinking they can have as much money as I can give them for as long as they keep delivering results and fixing stuff. I plan on working at least another 30 years and that should give me enough money to funnel into my addiction… we talkin’ beer, pizza, drugs and video games with the boys.
I just want to see something that was started… finished with close to perfection as possible. As I see things, they’ll be AT LEAST another 2 years of updates before the official AOE 3 shutdown phase.
What did I pay for a CD key on 3rd party website? $25 for base game… another $15 for the Chinese upgrade, and than another $15 between now and August? I can make it work.
On a side note, you know what would be cool? If they logged into the original AOM community (not retold), and started handing out free keys & copies to “merge” the community and active gaming pool. If they wanted to somehow host a giveaway, and charge me $25 in August I’d be down for that too. THIS IS BIG BRAIN STUFF THOUGH.
…being sold separately
I don’t suppose your a fan of the monthly subscription xbox pass? You’ll get everything for free as long as you don’t stop paying
@RankedOpponent Exactly, what’s $25 for a premium upgrade with 2 expansions included + the Freyr DLC? Frankly, that’s the price of 2 packs of cigarettes or 2 cinema screenings of your choice, and considering the value for money and the number of hours you can play, it’s almost a bargain.
And I hope they’ll add little gods packs in the future that can be bought separately like the Freyr one. A god pack like Freyr’s should cost around $5 but if they raised the price to $10 or $15 I’d still buy them. And I’d even be happy to do so because I love the game.
What are you rumbling about? Premium edition (50 bucks edition) got chinese for free. I got them for free.
If you did bought the premium edition, and didn’t got the Chinese, I suggest you contact support.
