The Age of Empires 3 DE version that I have on Windows takes time to launch after the initial popup that goes through “finding game updates” “syncing data” “starting game (3s)…”.
I calculated 23 seconds after that popup disappears and the small AoE III splash appears.
AoE 4 and AoM Retold launch much faster.
I have 6 mods installed but they’re all deactivated.
I also excluded the whole game folder and Xbox folders from Windows Defender so it shouldn’t affect that.
I have a high end laptop.
- 2 TB WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD.
- Intel i9-13980HX.
- 32 GB DDR5 RAM.
- RTX 4080.
It shouldn’t be my laptop. Is this normal?
Unfortunately, mods affect the loading time even when they’re disabled.

I’ll note them down and uninstall them all today to test then, and then report back. I didn’t want to do that since one of them is 4 GB and for some reason, it is slow to download and install them in-game.
That doesn’t affect me too much though. I understand about not launching new DLCs for the game but I just installed this a few weeks ago and it’s packed with content for me as I haven’t played it yet apart from testing skirmishes just to see how it plays (lovely game, prefer this over AoE 2/4).
Thanks, I removed all mods and now it launches in ~12 seconds rather than ~23. I’ll keep them removed until I actually need them/use them.
It’s still a bit long though compared to other games but it’s fine.
